Glad to see you enjoying the swap!
if you don’t have caster shims in with those long front shackles, I’d highly recommend some.

Yes it’s good to be putting some miles on and enjoying it. Yes the PO installed steel caster shims while the shackles were installed.

This weekend was great, I got to put the cruiser through its first test. We loaded up and drove it right back to where I was in April when the crankshaft snapped. We loaded up for a quick one night trip, and drove out to the mountains to take advantage of some cool air that moved in. I convinced the wife to sleep under the ARB Awning and I have never actually set up the wall kit, so I had to go look at it and make sure it had a floor. I had looked up some cots that work for a double mattress and had a few ideas, but when we got down to it I just ran to walmart and picked up two single cots since they could be returned if we really didn't like them. We have a pretty nice Nemo Roamer double mattress pad we picked up at an REI sale so we were excited to try out the setup.

First Order was stopping at a local spot to get breakfast, I got brisket eggs benedict...why not?

First we stopped a a swimming hole and let the dogs swim as we jumped of a small waterfall, the cruiser ran great the whole way so that was great.
Albertfalls.webp

Not a bad place to stop and cool off, the water was nice and the dogs enjoyed it more than we did.

After that we walked around town for a minute, had a mid day snack and walked along the river, then off to our campsite. We found a nice spot where I could setup the awning with level ground.

Like I said, I had never set up the ARB Awning and deluxe wall kit (that I purchased with the cruiser from the PO). This thing is nice, it has all four walls, and a floor as well as a ceiling. The ceiling has a clear pass through so the LED light from the awning shines in. The middle picture below is facing the cruiser, so it has a back wall that you can zip open to access the rear passenger door, but it is closed off to keep the bugs out!!! All 3 outward facing walls can unzip to be basically all screen. You can see we had room for the double mattress on cots and then space for a dog bed and plenty more.

Shannon wanted a nice Rumple blanket for camping so I got a woodland colored Woobie for a quarter of the price...:D

We got hit by two big storms in the middle of the night and we stayed warm and dry so I'd say the setup was a win!

We had a great dinner, Shannon made quesadillas, then the rain showed up and we hung out in the tent, here is a picture of Charlie passed out while I finished an adult beverage or two and watched the lightning show. The amber color of that photo is from the ARB awning LED lights, I had them on the warm light, dimmed down...another cool feature.

I had coordinated with my brother to stop by Sunday morning (he was going to be in the area). He stopped by the site while we were having coffee, breakfast, and just getting going. We split off from the group, fly rods in hand. It didn't take long to see some cool stuff, I immediately saw a Monongahela crayfish while we were throwing our packs on and starting down the trail. (Blue guy in the first picture below). My first cast hooked a decent Brook trout, so I knew I was done for after that.... saw a few fish, hooked a Rhododendron or two and before I knew it I was headed back to the camp.

Shannon and I broke down camp, hit the brewery for a pizza (first picture), then it was the 2ish hour drive home. The cruiser ran great!! Everyone slept, and I just listened to some tunes and enjoyed the A/C, which worked great. Today I finally broke down all the boxes from all of the parts and took them to the recycling center.

All in all it was a great weekend and a great test of the cruiser. I still have plenty to do: Cruise control, dual battery kit, run a longer wire for the winch and rewire the roof lights... but I can drive it now, and I'm enjoying that!

I still need to see if my dad has a 46mm socket in his shop, I started to tear into the 3F-E to see exactly how it looks. Heres one of the pieces of my crankshaft...need to pull the harmonic balancer, timing gears, and backing plate to get the other part of the crankshaft out. Most of the bearings look good, but the 1st and last main bearing look a little rough, I am assuming that was from the crank snapping but who knows....

What diagram are you using for your clutch switch. Or at least what pin/ connector. I'm about to dive into setting up cruise as well
C1 Blue connector pin 35 is the CPP wire (clutch pedal position) the switch just interrupts ground. The diagrams I’ve been using are here LT1swap

That is such a great wall hanger Carnage Trophy.

I was finally able to fly up to West Chester, PA and meet up with @rfj62 and pick up a dash I bought from him back in April. I have been so busy with the swap (and life) that its taken me this long to get up there and pick it up....

It was either a 3 hour drive, endless amounts of money to ship it, or a 55min flight up, so I chose the latter of the three.

It was a rainy over his way, but it was clear and a million over my way....
IMG_5308.webp

I made good time with a slight tailwind and mostly a crosswind, luckily when I saw the weather had moved in it was not convective and that mde for a smooth ride over, I was able to sip my coffee and enjoy it.
IMG_5314.webp

If it fits it ships!! luckily Jeff had a nice box to keep the dash protected on its journey home. We chatted for a bit and I checked out his sweet 62. I didn't get any pictures but its almost the same color as mine, maybe just shade or two darker (which I like).

IMG_5319.webp

Today I figured I would go ahead and install it and it was pretty quick considering I had just pulled the old one for the swap. I had it out and the new one in in about an hour, just in time for dinner.

Its difficult to tell which one is the old one, but it is the one on the right
IMG_5336.webp

Now I just need to find a decent place to recover my steering wheel. Not really something I am in a hurry to do, but it just looks hideous! But I am more than happy to have a decent dash with no cracks, and it was nice to buy it from another mud member and save a little $$$$ in the process!
IMG_5338.webp

I also straightened out my steering wheel. I had tried before and failed because someone installed the steering shaft 180 degrees out, so the bolts aren't accessible when the wheel and tires are centered. Today I pulled the steering shaft cover, steering shaft, aligned the box and steeringwheel, then put everything back together.

I bought some used front seatbelts from Jonas at Barnyard cruisers back in May. My passenger side seatbelt didn’t have the stop on it & was crushed by the door, so it would fall down to the floor every time soneone got out…. Turns out my drivers side was a different style (possibly wrong) so I swapped them both out tonight.

IMG_5385.webp

The set I got from @jkdur728 were in great shape & the buckles aren’t broken, the belts had the plastic stop on them still….good as new. The wife will be happy now!

So incredible. That swap looks incredible! Nice work. Glad I could help with the belts
Thanks, I love the belts glad I got them appreciate it! I’ll have to drive down your way sometime soon.

Another weekend, another good trip!!!!! the wife and I keep going to Canaan Valley, WV about 2 hours away. We talked about it, it just makes sense for us to get 2 hours away and the whole place changes, higher elevation, cooler nights, prettier trees...unless we have a 3 or 4 day weekend its just not worth driving 4-5 hours away for a new spot.

Before we left I got the new Felpro Gaskets on and got rid of the o-ring style gaskets I had. A while back just for fun I got this Escalade/Denali Driver Information Center (DIC) and kept the Class 2 data and VSS wires handy... I know I should be hooking up the cruise control and other more useful features, but this is kinda cool, the only feature I don't have is 'miles to empty' because I have a stock fuel pump an sender, so nothing is being communicated to the ECM, otherwise it will say. Average MPG, Instant MPG, Gallons burned, Distance Traveled, Average Speed, Timer, Date and a few other useless features.... I was debating mounting it in the dash below the radio/above the ashtray...

Ih8mud_montage.webp

We averaged 14.3mpg climbing a bunch of mountains loaded up with plenty of camping gear, better than it used to be with the stock engine, still need to get the overdrive gears installed, they are sitting in the shop waiting.

We showed up to the campsite just before dark and got takeout dinner on the way, so we relaxed and ate before setting up camp in the dark. After that it was business as usual, rainy day hike, I went fishing and caught the smallest fish ever, then we made dinner camped out and relaxed....
Camping_Montage.webp

We rode the lift up the local ski hill to take a look at the fall colors, its starting to look pretty good at the higher elevations, I'm sure it will look great in a week or two! This extra awning came in handy with the rain all day saturday.

Once again I’ve been daily driving the cruiser and enjoying it. I noticed a drip coming from the power steering & the pump started to make a little noise but always had plenty in the reservoir…. It looked like it was coming from the steering box so I ordered a reseal kit from @city-racer. I was finally able to tear into it this weekend.

IMG_5976.webp

I threw this YouTube video up in the shop and followed along.

Got everything back together tonight & will take it for a test drive tomorrow, started and ran with no leaks while cycling it lock to lock. So I’m sure it will be good.

Well I got the steering box back on and have been driving it for a while…. Power steering pump has been whining since the leak started. I figured it was air because it never really ran low on fluid & never ran out. But I put new fluid in & couldn’t bleed out the noise….. so tonight I pulled it PS pump & I’m just going to put a manufactured one on since this one is original from the donor engine….
IMG_6098.webp

I pulled the whole bracket & removed it from the top… my PS Pulley puller is getting old, so I’d rather pull it on the bench.

Also it was really cool for @mtn biker to have me on the Classic Cruiser Podcast! Always fun to talk about cruisers…..

I've never seen a 3fe (or 2f for that matter) crank split like that. Impressive.

Cool truck, love the build.

I have no idea how it happened...kinda wondering if the crank was dropped or knocked over during the recent rebuild or just a defect that lasted 30 years..... I am stumped.... I drove it nice and easy for the 3K miles I had it.... but I am very happy with where it is now.

Thanks!!!

New power steering pump is in and I bled it a billion times, put vacuum on the reservoir and bled it while it was on the lift a ton of cycles lock to lock... unless the steering box has a leak that is sucking in air, I can't see why it didn't quiet down. No leaks, everything is operating fine...Its louder than it originally was, but not terribly loud....I dunno if I feel like tearing that gear box back apart...we'll see.

This past weekend the wife had a fall family trip so I took the cruiser down to New River Gorge National Park.... I tried to stop by Elk River and hook some fish first, but I ran out of time and only pissed them off....
Landcruiser.webp

We got to the gorge and drove the cruiser all over, checked out some hikes drove down under the bridge and back up and I went fishing at Glade Creek for a bit, but it rained a decent amount over night and the water was cloudy, I didn't see anything really biting but I got up close and personal with an otter and I think we were both equally suprised.

We went to Bridge Brew Works and I saw a 60 as we pulled in, turns out its one of the owners and he tracked me down....we chatted cruisers for a while it was cool, hes doing some nice work to the 60 and plans to do an H55f swap soon as well as a new carb, header and a few other things. Its a pretty clean solid rig.
Landcruiser2.webp

Ever since the steering box rebuildthere have been a few quirks... The new powersteering pump is whining and never really settled down, and the worst part is the steering has a more sensitive spot in the steering...sounds weird but turning the wheel to the right a quarter turn the steering gets really sensitive and progressively increases the turn, once you get through that position it is less sensitive.... so I tore back into it. Found some scuffing and a decent ridge on the steering box housing, so I cleaned it up with emory cloth and scotch brite and it was a lot better, I also gouged one of the o-rings up so I replaced it.

I also found an exhaust hanger broken so I took it off to stop the rattling, I plan on ordering a new one to get it supported again...

Also with the New River Gorge becoming a national park, I knew a visitor center refresh was long over due....its always been a National Scenic River but only recently became a national park. With the recent update to the visitor center they finally removed the picture of my great grandmother from on of the displays.

I was able to get the steering box back together tonight and I will test drive it tomorrow and see if it fixes it.

I added two more degrees of caster shim to the front and now it doesn't read the road so much, the test drive went great too. Also the steering box is much better now.... I fixed the inconsistent turn rate by sanding down that rough spot in the case.... so now the piston can move freely. That o-ring was probably fine, it was still sealing the cap that the sector shaft rides in, but better safe than sorry. Now to get to the things I still have been wanting to get done:

Hook up dual battery kit (just been setting on the shelf)
Add noise proofing to trans hump (under Carpet)
Hook up Winch (longer power cable on order)
Cruise Control. (just ordered some pieces).
