Well Bumpers are a must. I've been searching all day for a thread about removing the rocker panels because I've seen a photo of them removed before I just can't find it. When I take them off I'm gonna put sliders in their place. Gives a little extra clearance and since mine are destroyed anyway why not. Also the cross member is tore up and I had planned on replacing it with an IPOResque skid plate. The pictures look bad but when you realize that I don't really care about the body damage, and the only thing that really broke was a light, then it's not that bad at all. Everything else can be repaired pretty easily. It's not like I destroyed a tie rod or snapped an axle shaft like my buddy in the ford. If anyone can find a pic of an 80 with the rockers removed and sliders added that would be great. I was looking at getting a set of Marlin Crawler's to put on there. You think I could make an Insurance claim of this stuff? Only Kidding, but really?

..or goto Huntington or Edison and troll for two days, get caught up in a storm w/ garbanzo bean sized hail, and get completely skunked and limited on what trails you can run?
I think out of the last two weekends your's was the better of the two?
Bring your casting pole and some rooster tails next time, the trout at both Rad and Coyote taste great grilled or fried.

That looked like the damage I'd expect of any trail rated over "easy" at GSMTR (Golden Mountain) this year.
My rig has sliders and a front bumper, and I was lucky to escape relatively unscathed... but then again, I didn't do anything crazy with it because I wanted to drive the 600+ miles back home at the end of the week...
Nice show, however. All the more reason I'm going to have more armor on my truck before GSMTR next year so I can attempt a few more things without worrying about the drive home again

Dont bother cutting out the rockers just mount your sliders underneath

You should be able to get some of the dents out from around the tail light just take off the interior panel and use a socket on the end of an extension and start pounding with a hammer you should get some of it out so you can re-mount a tail light

I would recommend putting some type of bedliner on the sides no more scratchs to worry about and it really helps when you have to pop out dents if they will pop out.
I would also put minnie sliders like the one in the picture in front of your rear control arm frame mounts it really helps eliminate them as hang up point

you know, the first time I got caught up on those mounts I though of that exact thing. I've seen it done before.

Gee, I remember it bothering me for a long time when I hopped a bank in my shiny new FJ55 a couple of weeks after purchase and put a nice little ding about a foot long in the rocker panel under the drivers door. Wasn't even deep. Had to look at it for the next four years until the rockers rusted out and I had them replaced...

Actually I remember backing into the tree and busting my tail light and I remember slamming down on a rock and destroying my driver side rocker panel. Everything after that is a blur of granite and sheet metal. I need to take a hammer to it so my door will close the right way.
i did what you did. i bought the truck expecting it to be a wheeling rig, did new exhaust, just threw some cheap trail gear 67" rock sliders, and i have beat the hell out of it. the only weak link is my (stock) tires. those will change and i do plan on lifting her up a bit. but the front and rear bumpers are hammered. plan on building new ones so i wasn't worried.
on a side note, this decision was made for me by my dear
who wanted to try it out on a trail, and was scared she would get stuck (I was at work at the time) so she tried to straddle a rut and drove through some gnarly bushes, and gave it the ole custom mountain pin stripping. but she is a good sport so i forgave her, and the put a bunch more scratches on it myself
that's an amazing trail, and these things are insanely capably stock. i never cease to be amazed.

Why do people say these are ruined when they have a few scratches on them? It is what they are designed and built for. They are not engineered for malls.

Those control arm mount sliders are GREAT! good idea. Bet those work great. I might have to do this
