That is an interesting failure. Ripped the splines out of the differential side gear. Nothing else broken, just that and the collateral damage to the axle shaft?

Nothing else broken, has me scratching my head as well. Not what I was expecting to find for sure.

I've heard of drive flanges failing like that, but not diff side gears. Cool!

Looks like I spoke too soon, found this while cleaning the knuckle balls.

The mud community is amazing. Someone noticed my post in the 80 series forum and offered to send me his old front carrier that he had left over from a locker install.

I got it in the mail today and got it installed into my 3rd.

Are there any members here who are gear savvy or does anyone know of a reliable shop in the Raleigh area that can look the 3rd over and make sure everything is to spec before I re-install it? I would prefer it not blow up on me again.

east coast gear supply - they’re top notch.

Cured my hard starting issue. Always has taken me many attempts to get my fj60 to fire up, always assumed it was because of putting off the carb rebuild. About 60k miles ago the PO’s PO (original) dropped $12k+ on engine rebuild and lots of maintenance, so just made me think the car had gotten gummed up from bad gas. Well @fj40alex convinced me to do some more baselining first. Realized I never swapped the distributor cap/rotor and wires when I first got it. So ordered up some expensive oem parts from mr T, and thank goodness I did... he literally idiot proofed this job, the wires and the cap are clearly numbered. Thank goodness because that is how I noticed the #1 and #3 wires have been switched ever since I’ve owned the truck!!!!!!! Also noticed the cap was on very loosely with lots of play due to having two of the three non-oem screws stuck but not tight... no prong... cap and rotor and wires were not oem... cap was made I. Italy, not sure if they were bad but doesn’t hurt.

so glad I did this maintenance to uncover such a findemental issu... curious if it’ll now have a noticeable improvement On the road...

didn’t swap in the new plugs since four of the six ones are clean andall are new, plus I noticed the valve cover is leaking oil so will do that gasket and clean things up before swapping in new plugs

In other news, also fixed my non working horn after years of head scratching, by simply unplugging one of the two wires that goes to my aftermarket horn. Previously I spent hrs and hrs cleaning contacted, replacing brass o ring/washer and pin, and trying every hack on mud... I new it was a ground issue but tried everything I could to clean any ground I could think of...eventually I saw a thread that said some aftermarket horns ground via the mount not the wire. Unplugged one and bingo yrs of frustration vanished! Now my neighbors get to hear my excited kids honking the newly operable horn.

One last update, also quasi cured my non-working high beams. Dig deep into the steering column and cleaned some brass connection points after following a great write up on mud.

installed led bulbs in the rear, now have hyper flashing turn signals but safety at night has improved.

also finally had my helper clean the Hurricane creek souvenirs off my truck after six months. Some deep souvenirs remain in the form of pin striping but at least the dirt, mud and rocks are no longer wedged in my bumper and other truck crevices! Need to straighten my bumper back down and get a new exhaust next

Finally got the rebuilt transfer case reinstalled. Got it lifted and pushed in. Tightened up the six bolts (including two new that go in from the front). Then as I was reconnecting the electrical I realized the shift lever was stuck between the body and the motor actuator on top of the TC. Can’t get the case to “shift” but don’t think I’m supposed to be able to. Started efforts to pull it back off and turn the lever into place. Couldn’t get the TC off the transmission today. Trying more tomorrow.

I may have finally learned to start with the easier and cheaper solution before jumping to the worst case scenario.

I thought my air pump was getting ready to go. I happen to have another one on the shelf, but didn’t want to go through swapping it out. Instead I decided to try putting new belts on first to see what would happen. Brand new belts are installed and that engine bay has never been quieter!

I know I am not the skinniest guy out there but dam the seat on my 80 stripped the gear again. This is the third attempt at replacing them, I replaced them twice and Gurt replaced them once and the driver seat keeps stripping the gears. It sucks even more that I have now wrapped them in new leather. The seats are comfy as hell but if I cant get them to move back and forth I might be removing them and replacing them with aftermarket seats that have manual adjustment.

Has anybody else had this same issue? maybe I am doing it wrong but I took them all apart cleaned them and greased them all up again twice. Not sure what I am doing wrong but this sucks

You replaced the endcaps as well? I think at one point, someone was cutting some al or steel ones, but not sure. Worth a mud search or inquiry thread in the 80 section. I feel your pain, no fun pulling seats out and replacing those stupid gears.
