Head gasket let go on my 80 just after the ONSC Christmas Party. Merry Christmas to me! Got everything taken apart today. Thanks @Roxx for your help.

Changed the oil on my 40 today, not due to mileage, but mainly because it’s been almost three years.

Feeling accomplished I decided to install the LEDs that my wife got me for Christmas. The difference is amazing. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to reconnect the speedo cable, despite hours of trying, numerous MUD thread searches for tips and a call to @JohnVee. Time to text a few of the local guys for help.

12/29/19 Update: Dave Rushing let me come by today. We were able to get the speedo cable reconnected to the cluster after disconnecting the cable housing from the t-case and pushing the cable so that it moved closer to the end by the cluster.

Wow. 85,000 on my ol' girl.

did this to my truck the other day: LEG ROOM PLEASE!!!!!

gave me about 3 more inches of leg room and slightly elevated the front of seat. my body no longer feels like it got punched in the dick after driving for a few hours.

also upgraded my wiper arms to to 4runner ones. also made a nice difference.

I am not sure where to put this lite (light) wrenching. Got the idea from a tacoma website. 1 Banana job.

Finally installed a rear backup camera for the 80. After months of searching, I found a camera that not only does 180* view but changes the view with the click of a button supplied in the kit AND costs less than $50. The picture quality isn't the greatest but from what I can tell none of them are. I'm still debating on where to mount it. Low on the tailgate is the best but that means either drilling into the tailgate or using double sided tape and a mounting plate.
Parkvision 180* backup camera

The Tundra got all new speakers, steering wheel controls, and factory amp bypass. When we purchased the truck, the stereo was shot and the tweeters buzzed loudly. The truck came with the upgraded JBL Premium audio system. Yeah it might have been awesome in 2006 but in 2019 the front speaker surrounds were shot and the back speakers didn't work. After several days of building a giant bird's nest of wiring, the stereo is done and it sounds great.
  • Pioneer AVH-2550NEX
  • JBL GTO Components in the front and coaxials in the rear
  • Parking brake bypass installed to defeat limited menu system in the radio
I've ordered another Parkvision backup camera for the tundra but this will be an easy install.

Important .... with turbo diesels watch your exhaust temps. One creative way is with engine coolant.

😁

how are you liking the tundra. With the new house and ongoing projects, we need a truck. I’m quietly looking for the one like @weejub had and you have currently.

It's not the most exciting vehicle to drive but the 4.7L power is nice and dare I say almost fuel efficient. The suspension is very smooth (TRD package) and the interior is quite nice and well laid out. The used market demands a premium for these trucks and finding a low mileage vehicle in good to great condition is tough. I was scanning 5 different used car sites for months with a 200 mile search radius before I found mine locally with 116K miles and the right price.

Be very careful of any trucks from VA or WV. While bordering NC, trucks from this area experience significantly more salt and corrision to the underside. We checked out a beautiful 06 double cab near NC state. Clean paint and interior but the frame rails and underside of the body were completely shot. I pulled of chunks of the frame rail on the test drive. It didn't help that the brakes also failed during the test drive.

The biggest drawback is the turning radius and backup view of the double cab. The turning radius is more similar to a bus rather than a truck. I also struggle backing it up due to the length of the cab and bed. In all my other vehicles I can gauge distance fairly well but the Tundra is so much harder to get the view correct. The backup camera will help tremendously.

BTW, both the 80 AND the Tundra now need their alternators rebuilt. Both have to be jumped every time. The battery in the 80 is a Costco Interstate and only 1 1/2 old. The Tundra battery is a Duralast Gold and a little more than 3 years old.

My back hasn’t been the same since the Christmas party so I have been working on little things hat I can do inside the house while seating down.
finally got around to changing out the leather in the Lexus it wasn’t too hard. Got one done today. Should be able to finish the driver seat tomorrow.

^ That’s funny. My passenger seat is sitting in the garage with new leather I finished putting on tonight. Drivers seat is the plan for tomorrow over here too.

I would of been done already but I ran out of hog rings.

That would be nice. Are they individual or together like staples?
the only pack I found was of 5000 and I don’t need that many.I’m going to look at one more store and if I can’t find a smaller pack I will take you on your offer.
Thanks.

They are individual Staples I have a tool as well. talk to Garrett, he is home today. They are in the black tool box.

I removed the driver seat to strip it if it’s old leather and once I had it all apart I noticed the bottom foam cage was broken in 3 spots and the foam was pretty messed up in the door side.
I improvised and was able to salvage the foam and the basket. I weldedand bent the basket back to its original shape and I used my wife’s yoga mat to reinforce the foam. This def made the new leather much tighter and gave the bottom half of the seat a much firmer feel.

Not very easy to see but the left side is bent and broken it was barely hanging on. Welded it, cleaned the surface rust, and painted it.

Here is how I reinforce the stock foam with 1/2

Here it is with the new leather. You can kind of see it looks a little more puffy than before. But now I don’t feel the metal on the left side and the yoga mat feels nice and firm.

The guy who redid the 80 seat used carpet to reinforce the sides ,or it was going to wear through again.

if it does. Which I’m sure it will I now know that it is four bolts and three hog rings away from a quick fix. I should do add the carpet or something similar for protection agains the metal but my hands are toast from messing with the upholstery on the two seats. It will have to be done if or when it wears out again. My son will own the truck by then so maybe he will deal with it if it bothers him enough. That’s a good tip though. I wouldn’t have thought to do that.
