My kids dragged this little 125cc quad home last weekend from the neighbors' house. It had been sitting on flat tires behind a shed out in the weather for a couple of years. All the plastics are trashed. The neighbors gave up on it when their kid outgrew it and broke the frame almost in half and it failed to start. They were going to take it to the dump, so Nathan saved it. I determined that when the frame broke, it took out the brake safety switch and that was the reason it wouldn't fire. Pulled the plastics, cleaned the tank, rebuilt the carb, welded and gusseted the frame, changed the oil, bypassed the brake switch, dropped in a battery and bingo! We have a winner! I have ordered new plastics for it so it will look as good as it runs. I'd estimate that I'll have $175 in it when I'm done. It was a fun Sunday project for sure. Cheap, instant gratification projects are the best and to top it off, Dad ends up being the hero. The kids will have fun with this.

How does this change your timeline? Can you get the new heads in before/after/at the same time as you expected for the machine work on the old ones?

Just ordered new OEM Ford heads from Asheville Friendship Johnson City Ford (yes, the third dealership I tried to place an order with) in Johnson City, TN because apparently asheville engine is in TN now :rolleyes:. They'll be picked up by the machine shop, o-rings put in, then shipped to me next week. Same timeframe.

Like the others have said...sucks, yet, good to find now, your intuition to dig in has shown to be right. What a strong and solid power plant you'll end up with, something that will give you years of service. And, nice name for the project, surely Mayhem will result in a variety of avenues for the future...:beer:

Put a little time in the 80 this week before heading to OBX. Tried patching some exhaust leaks. We'll see if they hold but sounds and smells better for now. lol. Went through the ARB compressor wiring and found a power isse that was keeping it from powering up. Removed the RTT since it would be dead weight on this trip. Relocated the hi-lift so that I can fab up a bracket for the light bar. Oil change and air filter swap. GZila awning mounts should be here today so hope to get the Arb awning on there tonight. so much to do and so little time. Might end up finishing up the light bar install at the beach house. lol.
 
So I've got the stock 2F in my 55

I added a cheap Sunpro tach a few years ago and all was good. Then I added a 40k volt coil and Pertronix to my stock distributor, and now the tach reads roughly double what it should, but only at higher RPMs. At idle it reads normal. at 1500 rpm (engine speed) the tach reads a bit high, but as I get the engine to 2-2500 RPM, the tach reads 4-5k rpm.

I called cruiser outfitters, and they claim they have never heard of this issue. Did some googling, and it is an issue across all makes and models (adding pertronix to older factory components)

Anyone else have this problem? Some people claim to have fixed it via modded tachs, but nothing 100%.
 
Plus you can go ~16MPH at 0 RPM, way cool! :grinpimp:

Helped @FJinTegaCay flush his brake, and clutch fluids. Did a little work on the LX also.
 
Block prep for MLS gasket question ahead. Head scraped with new razor blades, then a green scotch brite pad, then a 120grit sanding cup like this:

If I were using a regular single-piece gasket like Toyota gaksets I'd call it good, but I've never ran a MLS gasket before and want to make sure I'm good. Spent a few hours prepping the block mating surfaces, will probably go over once more with another new razor blade, but is there anything else I should be doing?

11th anniversary is tomorrow which, lucky for me, is the "steel" anniversary. Made this little guy to place in one of the flower beds. His name is Ferrous.

Brake pedal is in the center position of three, it can be moved 1" to the left or right and also about 1" closer to the driver. Gas pedal pivots on a spline and can also be adjusted up and down, on an arc. FJ62

It's the little things that slow your roll. See the round pin in the rectangular hole. Should be in the hole to the right. GM factory harness. This kind of thing is exactly why you never try to force any connectors on a harness. They should go together with light pressure.
