Ok , good deal . I've seen damage like that before , the rear gears are usually half destroyed as well - hard launches from a young driver doesn't work good on those parts . Frame is looking great , nice job on the brackets .

made this tool to torque the wheel bearings on the full floaters. its ugly but works great

I sourced a set of cable locked 4.10 geared 60 axles for Tucker and we were going to install the cable locked third members into his rig but at this time he wants to keep the 3.70 diffs from the old set up and see how it runs out with the new 5 speed. So for now the cable lockers will be collecting dust until they are ready for some action.

Semi floater coming apart so we can rob the diff for the new full floater

Using a cable locked diff gasket I did go ahead and trace and cut out the full float rear axle housing for the cable locker mechanism that way when Tucker comes around ;) it will make installation a breeze.

All but buttoned up the full floater last night then at the last minute realized we needed to replate the brake line junction on the rear axle. Went ahead installed the new long side line which was available from toyota along with new retaining clips. The short side line I bent up myself.

There has to be something to update us with.........

Yeah gotta admit I've been slow to update the thread. Have spent the last two months primarily procuring parts and not doing a whole lot of wrenching but here is a brief update.

Tucker pretty much drove the other 40 on almost a daily basis and the since the rig needed to be reliable enough to be up for a spur of the moment cross country trip we decided to make this one a bit more modern, reliable, and of course more powerful. As many of you know I'm a bit of a diesel nut and that's a very contagious condition so with a little coercion I talked Tucker into repowering this rig with a hz diesel. The first step was to source a brand new hz input shaft and pull the brand new h55 apart so the input shaft could be swapped in. We picked up a hz from Georg as well as another h55/splitcase because we were in need of a tcase to put onto the back of the new trans. Very excited when the engine arrived so that same night we got it up on the engine stand and started doing a once over. The excitement didn't last long when we removed one the engine mount brackets and found a hole rusted in the block going straight into an oil galley. Georg was great to work with so the next day I made another crate and made arrangements to send it back.

so we started hunting another engine, drove to Atlanta and test drove and 80 series which the owner was selling an hdt out of. The engine seemed to run well enough but a couple of very minor things turned us off of it. So in the meantime we kept going so I rebuilt the split case for the new 5 speed. The case got a terrain tamer rebuild kit as well as a brand new Toyota front output flange, powder coated all linkages, and new studs for the rear output flange.

how do you get a rust hole in the engine block???

The hz had previously lived in a mine. Despite the set back Georg was great to deal with throughout the whole ordeal and we were glad we hadn't purchased the drivetrain from some unknown internet source.
