Clarkson said Alfas will break your heart, but we raced and broke the car instead. We broke that car over and over and over. We used up every cheap GTV part within 100kms. We had blue sky under all 4 tires on Deers Leap. We successfully lost races with only 3rd gear. The head gasket failed often enough our nickname was White Smoke. I crossed the finish line one time, dead last, with the muffler sparking on the ground and the front brakes on fire.

Good times.

Ha! Yep, you've certainly paid your dues and had some adventures along the way.

The FJ40 tractor engines should be considerably more reliable, that is, if you don't attempt the same blue sky moves. If you do, we'd all like to see the pics.

75 is in fact the best year. There are many that will claim otherwise, but they were likely dropped as a baby.

Well, that was fun! Oil change went easy, though I was shocked how thin and black the old oil was. Would have thought it had been done recently, and I'm glad I didn't take any chances. The ground clearance and top mount filter make it a breeze. All engine bay fluids checked and topped.

I used a chunk of tyvek to keep from becoming one with my mud driveway, and it's now a part of my kit.

Speaking of kit, it's coming together thanks to suggestions frome the hive mind. I'll see what I can fit under the seats, then add a tub of spare parts for boonies when the time comes.

In terms of driving, it's getting even more fun. I'm learning to trust the torque and not over rev when rev matching. Oh the sounds! She sure lets me know when I get it right.

So, even with my busted rib, it's great. All the fluids are happy for now, though I'm wondering if I should re and re the gear oil. Tomorrow I beg buy borrow or steal a grease gun and hit the chassis, now that I know my old body can crawl around under without drama.

Hope everyone had as good a morning as me!

Nice feeling driving with new oil. Since you’ve had a surprise changing your black thin oil, it is probably prudent to continue the fluids swap in the diff’s, trans and transfer. Be sure you can easily remove the filler plugs before draining for the transmission and transfer case. It would suck not being able to get them refilled properly.

Here’s another tidbit. If you remove the transfer fill plug and the fluid comes pouring out as if it was overfilled, you have a seal problem between the two components. Look up the @shipmag bypass hose until you decide to replace that seal. Ain’t it fun ???

Good luck

That's another ferry ride to get enough gear oil (and i found the thread that had capacities). Will do. Great tip about fill plugs... the bung on the pan was tight enough.

@knuckle47, means if the trans is over filled and the tcase in low you could have a bad seal between them. The tcase will pump gear lube into the tranny if the seal is bad.
