I have one of those original bags if you need more info, specs, and so-on. The zipper is indeed brass YKK on an OD canvas strip.

Is your bag OD or Tan?

Closer to OD than tan but not what I would call OD. It has been in my possession for well over 35 years and I can't even remember how I got it. I think I bought it new to go in my then new 1980 RN47 4WD pickup because I liked the Cruiser bag better. At about the same time I bought a Stout pickup metal box, I still remember the part number 09120-55010, I still have that metal box as well.

That is what came with my 75, but i see a lot of them were tan as well.

The bag is in my BJ74 at the moment and I have no images currently stored. Here are a couple of the Stout box and some mid-year tools.

That grease gun was way-stupid money by the way. I still can't believe I actually bought it.

It does come down to whoever was supplying the bags for Toyota ... I had seen very clean original bags and they look to be more od#3 also known as pea green and others call it mistakenly khaki

And I have seen very tan ones that could have been OD 3 at one time ... But... Mostly in pics... My bag I recall is a dark khaki ... Buts it's faded and dirty :) so maybe at one time it also was looking OD 3 or maybe the tanish khaki ... I'll have to look when I get home

OD #3 is very tan in one light and very green in another

It will be very hard to find a large brass in od#3 these days

Your best to just get a tan or Khaki ... Just as you know about the variations of colors in OD from one place to another same goes for this ... And not two suppliers will match unless ther are from the same manufacturer... Even then different batches will be slightly different

My bag is between OD 3 and OD 7. Perhaps leaning toward 3.

OD's range from 1-34?

Around this time frame 35-80's most every manufacturer was vat dying OD colors it's quick it's easy it's cheap ... But... It wicks into the fiber and because of this you get fading and color variations ... Many color variations ...

How long the fiber was in the vat ... How dirty is the vat... How old is the dye ... Is it cold dyed or hot vat dyed ... Is the vat continually mixed or does color settling happen because it's not ... So many variables I don't even think I hit a third lol

In comparison today most quality fabrics are solution dyed where as the fibers are colored before hand ... Synthetics the color is added before the fiber is even extruded... That's why these keep their color much longer without fading

One OD could look like a 3 and somebody's 3 can look like a dirty 5 as well as somebody's #5 is in fact more so a number 3 or 4 :)

Not that that's as clear as a vat of 4 month old OD 7

I would just go with availability and what looks good lol

Sorry if I threw in confusion

What shade is 646?

From the bags I've seen the color ranges from dark OD to tan, with the earlier bags being darker. The bag is made from different material than the canvas tool rolls. The bag fabric has a vinyl/plastic outside and cloth inside. The binding is canvas. Given the type of material, the color differences for these bags would seem to be due more to differences in the original fabric color rather than from fading. The binding is still canvas, so would certainly fade. Here are some examples.

Don't know the exact date of this ad, although the jack is 1972-76 (@treerootCO)

FWIW - The tool bag in my '77 looks like this. Not 100% sure if it is OEM to my rig, but by the wear, it appears from the 70's. Zipper on it wasn't working when I bought my FJ40, but added some Valvoline 20W-50 and some love, works fine now.

Oh, it will have an updated friend to go with it before too long, thanks to @Tanker120. :hillbilly:

I'd almost have to say that's the old vinyl-impregnated canvas , or whatever they called it . The stuff I believe was done that way to prevent rot . It was used on some other automotive and marine stuff , can't remember now - maybe tractor covers or winter fronts on big trucks ?? I think here in the US it had some trade name too...

I thought we were just talking about the zippers and canvas :)

But... The very green bag is canvas from treerootco and not like the others I think that was a 72' bag

The others are a PVC coated cotton ... If you look up pinpoint vinyl or PVC Denim you will find a huge selection of good fabric

I don't have my bag... But... I think it's just a single texture type weave from the pics I see above... There is a better PVC faced fabric with a woven cotton backing ... Then higher end material is called twill weave and is multiple layers ... They have a butyl rubber inbetween a woven layer and the PVC coated twill layer ... I was looking to make my own multi layer sunbrella with a butyl rubber membrane between ... But... Finding a butyl rubber spray in USA is impossible .... Only place close is UK ... I gave up on that idea lol and everything else just didn't work right

Toyota had the cheap stuff ... They also used on the vinyl tops ... This is also why there are so few original vinyl tops ... the PVC becomes brittle and would have benefited from a product like 303 to keep it flexible... The high end stuff is treated with a product like303 but is very expensive (name escapes me)

You are right-but I am getting a lot of my other questions answered-thanks again for the info, I am looking for a zipper for my bag, it was replaced and not very well. But if I could find the zippers and materials I may try to do a reproduction tool bag next? although stitching is pretty tight to the edge and using a lighter thread really would make any error show as well as vinyl is less forgiving than canvas, canvas you make a mistake, take it apart and do it again, this material would show all the needle holes....

Here is my bag from my 75 FJ40. Lighter OD color

Mine is the same color.

With stuff like doing the bag ends your going to love the bias tape it will hold everything right where you need to stitch as long as you don't pull to hard
You are right, there is some tight corners on the tool bag, will have to see if I can find the right material first, going to start requesting swatches

I've ran some pretty tight turns when I first got Sailright's binding attachment , wanted to test it's limits before I messed up the projects I had to work on .
I have one of the reproduction bags from the guys in Europe - they did some pretty nice work I must say ....

Wish I could remember the name of that material - Wheel Horse used it on their snow cabs for tractors and some of the tractor storage covers - it did not last too well due to becoming brittle as Johnny mentioned .
The stuff was definitely a woven/sprayed stuff too , but amazingly flexible - at least for awhile .
