Making the pleat was always time consuming and a pain, I tried something new this time and it worked great! before I would fold and Iron the pocket with the pleat and then try to align it on the roll, took a lot of time and I was not always happy with the result,

Now I sew the pocket to the roll on the pre marked lines and sew the pleat in on the bottom as I go, no ironing and the pleat turns out great.

Good news, I may have a new source for Canvas, I am waiting on samples, and maybe twill tape from Japan, again waiting...I will update lessons learned as I make the next batch. Cost may go up, but will try to keep it close to what I charged on last batch.

I have continued to search for materials that would match or get close to matching the original tool roll, after realizing it can't be perfect I gave in and made it as close as the materials I could find....enough rambling....take a look at what I found and yes it cost 5 times more then the twill tape I had been using, but I had to get more, and it is Made in Japan and may have been the supplier for the Toyota tool bags.

Tool Bag on top is an original tool roll, below it, is the new twill tape (OD Green) from Japan, below that is what I used in the past and is also considered OD Green...o_Othe new tape's twill pattern is an exact match as well!
Hope the new canvas is a little closer to the original, and now I have to find new thread to match....

FYI, the sample card is from the place I got the twill tape in the USA

Canvas arrived and it is as close to original as i have been able to get, it is more drab than green and close to the twill tape color from Japan, very happy with the color👏, had to get it without a sample it was a buy it all (50') or nothing, but the color via photo looked good-but I have a closet full of canvas that looked good. It was a gamble and paid off. Working to get some strapping materials and thread to match, this next batch will be an upgrade as I continue to improve the rolls (improve is in matching materials of the original, not the quality of rolls) I will start posting pics once I start the project.

I may be able to repair rolls as well, not so much the canvas, but replace plastic list cover and twill tape, just a thought, would have to see the roll.

I will offer logo on large bag, but will have two versions, so when the time comes I will need to know which version (I will have a pic of the second version soon) from anyone ordering a large roll that wants the logo.

These are great!

I have sent a conversation to everyone on my list, if you didn't get a message from me, you may not be on the list and i missed you let me know and I will forward the message to you, thanks

Just want to comment that I've had one of Tanker's tool rolls from the first run back in 2016 and it is still AWESOME. I'm almost tempted to get another.

I have gone back through the messages and found a few I missed-just sent them a message, I am way over my limit of what I thought I was making, I will do my best to fill orders of confirmed (replied to me from today's messages) and work down the list from when you contacted me the first time, until I run out of materials and time....I have triple the amount form last order and may be quadruple.... this will take a little longer than I thought. looks like every one wants the logo on the large, so I will start that going, if something happen to the silk screen it will set me back,

So, I will attempt to fill as many as I can, the first 14 Med. rolls are done and I will go down the list of over 20 ordered and fill starting with whom asked first. I will make more with the next batch, but will be making a large roll batch first....You should be getting a message from me if you are one of the first 14.

REMEMBER I am not a professional sewer....I am a retired Tanker!, each roll will have it's own character, and is unique :)

I will not be taking any more orders, but will put you on a list, I feel I am still undercharging for these, for the amount of time it takes to make them, let see if I feel the same after the next batch. I will not raise prices on these, but will not promise that on future new orders. Here is some pics of Generation 3 Rolls:

Top buckle is original, middle is the new ones I am using and the bottom is the one I used in the past, I like the new one, it is a little bigger than original...but the the one I used in the past was a little smaller, quality of the new one is better than either...

The new strap had to be bigger to fit the new buckle, again a little bigger than original, but same herringbone pattern and color is a lot closer, also with the wider strap I was able to sew the end like the orignal, couldn't do that with the smaller strap.

Other upgrades I mentioned earlier was with the twill tape from Japan and color of canvas is a closer match.

I would like to purchase one if you have enough to do so. Thanks.

First set of Med. are out and received, I started the next batch of Large and a few more med. but need to stop for now, my mother passed away in July and and am now preparing the house to be sold, lots of work involved, and it will most likley be the end of October before I can start again.

I started reading this thread and I’m fascinated. I’ve done some beginner stitching, with lightweight canvas. I plan on doing more and getting better. Dad had a marine canvas shop for about 35 years. When he passed I brought his machines to Texas. He was using a Juki at the time. Right now I’m running a Singer portable made in October 1936.

I’ll post pictures.

Tanker120 your work is really impressive.

I realize the last post here was 4 years ago..but this is one of the few things about my Land Cruiser addiction that my wife actually enjoyed. She is a quilter for the last 3 decades and enjoys sewing and our Reddit sub to “sewing machine porn”. She runs those Singer 221 featherweights, 222 featherweight and several Brother machines as well as a JUKI Long-arm. The freaking thing is 10’ long.

what’s next….recipes?
