Too late to switch to synthetic oil?

Have an '04 with 208k and have always run cheapo conventional oil and changed religiously between 5-6k along with a factory Toyota filter. No issues and no oil leaks at all. I drive a lot more now and am debating on switching to Mobil 1 and move to a 10k change interval.

Any pro's or con's I might experience switching to synthetic now or just stick with conventional and change every couple of months?

Make the switch, zero issues at all.

I remember with the 80's few people reported new leaks with synthetic, something about smaller molecules (really) or that. Haven't heard that with the 100.

Pretty sure that was never true, just a myth.

Never too late to switch imo.

I run M1 Extended Performance and recommended filter. GO to Mobile site and you can pick the oil and it will mate it with the proper filter. I use this oil in both our cars and there is nothing better than 1 oil change per year.

Well, there def. were peeps, myself included, that switched and then saw some leaking, esp. on the upper pan arch. Think the recommend was using a blend like Rotella.

I use Amsoil 5w-30 and a Toyota filter with no problems.

The leaking is a good thing. Means it's cleaning up the built up crap out of your engine. Run the synthetic and if it leaks fix the leaks.

The only issues I've heard of when switching is going with a High Mileage syn, then switching back to regular syn and having leaks.
HM oils condition and swell oil seals which if not needed, will cause leaks.

No reason to fear the switch. I'd go to regular synthetic first. If you experience leaks, switch to a high mileage synthetic and just keep using it going forward.

This is an old myth that always bugs me. As others have said, switch. If any leaks happen to pop up, they were about to leak either way.

i switched to amsoil about a year ago. Ive got a 1999, at around 150k, no leaks. purrs like a kitten. But then again she has always purred like a kitten
