Indeed! I have a grease gun. Will get some grease and squirt it in there.

From memory, all the steering joints are spec'd as moly, while the rest are plain lithium grease.
Anything is better than nothing though

I was looking at that canister. Undid what looked like a little drain screw on it and oil came spewing out. Put it back on.
Oil was black. Looked like engine oil.

The line from the brake booster goes to the canister, which is filled with engine oil. It returns to the engine oil filter area.

There's a sketch in the following link that helps explain - there's an oil feed and return to the pump to keep it lubricated as well as vacuum port (where it sucks).

Until today, I had no idea this thing had a vacuum chamber, and even less that it was filled with oil-forget about knowing the pump is connected to the alternator.
I'm totally ignorant about how this all works.
I rebuilt a CJ7 from the ground up, sort of: body off/frame/rust fix/rewired headlight to taillight, clutch/transmission/new 4.0 engine/intake and exhaust manifolds... I knew that Jeep pretty well. But this thing is new to me.
The diesel part is what throws me for a loop. Probably all very straight forward, but right now it feels like a labyrinth!

I really like the truck. Some things I may have to pay a mechanic for: it's the time factor. I'm working on illustrating a few books, making a comic, writing, doing a YouTube channel, etc. so sometimes its best to pay and get it done. Except right now I'm pretty much broke...
But some things I will make time for, because it's pretty interesting, and it also gives me a way to do something other than sit on my butt in front of a computer!!! It's also pretty cool to do things oneself, and to know how the vehicle works.

It's easy to get overwhelmed. I think the best tactic is to take one thing at a time, and do it. If I start thinking about the rust, the bed mounts, the brakes, the engine leaking, etc. it gets scary.
However, if I think-I'll do the bed: take it off. Remove the rust. Weld on a few new structural flanges, prime/paint, put it back on.. then it becomes that one project, and getting it done feels good.
I hope to keep that mindset and make this another adventure!!!

My son is rebuilding an HJ45. It came with a fair bit of parts for the H engine. All OEM. If you need anything let me know. He is going a different way on the engine. Planning to sell them. I know my way around the H and 2H a decent amount. Let me know if you have Qs.

The wife and I bought a 1978 FJ0 new. We had the choice of three Cruisers in the whole state of Texas. At the time we lived in Dallas and as teachers had 2 1/2 months off in the summer. I drove the Cruiser from Dallas to Estes Park, Colorado by myself in 1979 while wife chased me in a Toyota Chinook camper. It was miserable even with air conditioning. Never had to worry about peeing because the mileage was so bad.
The next year we did the same thing. But our house sold and we had to drive back to Dallas to move to Estes Park. On the return I drove a rental truck. The wife drove the FJ40 solo from Dallas pulling a trailer with our '65 Triumph on board. She cussed on the CB all the way making 60 mph at best.
That was the end of our road trips in the '40 even though we owned it untill1998. We are smarter than that now. Our 1982, Ms. Scarlet" makes the three mile trip to the grocery and the occasional ten mile round trip into town. Never could and still can't hear the radio. '40s are like driving a beer can of rocks down the road. Can't hear a thing at speed, but after almost 50 years of marriage, it's still the best thing to drive if you are having an argument with the wife.

I used some Simple Green on the engine and washed it. I didn't do a deep scrub, just let it sit with SG for a little and then sprayed it down. Here's what I found afterwards:

So...
The coolant is a little low as well.
Suggestions welcome.
- I have an engine oil leak-seems like it could be the oil pan gasket.
- I have a coolant leak-can't figure out from where. Engine plugs? Doesn't seem to me mixed with the engine oil, so probably external leak.
- I have a broken off piece at the bell housing where one of the transmission bolts connects to the engine.
The coolant is a little low as well.
Suggestions welcome.

Stopped in middle of oil change. Can't access the damn filter enough to get it off. A 24mm seems to fit the nut on the front, but can't get in there with a ratchet, a wrench, anything!!!
I guess maybe a longer extension and a u joint adapter.
I may just leave that filter on for now as is.
Anyone know of a filter replacement/relocation kit for this? I'd rather switch to a modern filter, or at least be able to even relocate the existing one.
