So I have done some research on the forum about timing gears and did not find much. I bought the 74 FJ40 and the PO said the owner was blown. Pulled the valve cover and turned the motor and the valve train does not move. From what I understand they have gears not a chain. I plan on digging in further this weekend just wanted some insite.

HUH?

The gears last a long time. Generally not a needed maitenance item. you should be able to get 300,000 miles with out issue.

I realize that gears would last much longer than a chain set up. I will pop off the timing cover this weekend and I will let you know what I find. But right now I can turn the
Crank and the valve train is not moving.

Not entirely true. The later 2-piece 2F cam gears have been known to explode after delaminating at the isolator ring. There are plenty of threads on here documenting this. I don't think the '74's came with the two-piece cam gear, but one could have been installed at some point.

Well the timing gears were fine? Turns out the reason the valve train was not turn when I manually turned the harmonic balancer was the shear key inside was broke and it has worn the hole out where the key goes. Looks like a new crank is needed. I will post pics later.

Thanks for the help with the parts. Found a guy with a 2f. I am going to rebuild it and drop it in.
