I ws going to say I bought one from this guy too for my belleview

NIce pig.

I would recommend getting rid of that 3 speed. A 4 speed won't do anything for your highway speeds/rpms because both have a 1:1 top gear. But, having a synchronized 1st gear is very nice on the 4 speed.

The argument for a disc front axle is students get experience in doing a swap, they get experience in both disc (front) and drum (rear) brakes, and having discs up front is safer. A 40 front disc axle will fit. The only difference is where the brake line tee attaches to the axle.
I loved the 3 on the column but yeah the un sycronized first and reverse is rather annoying if you re not accustom to it. People always wanted to drive my 40 and I had to tell them about that and if they still wanted to. it was usually a struggle for them haha.

Great thoughts!
  • What if you took them through the FSM for maintaining and adjusting the drums, and then you all rebuild a disk front axle while it is on the bench and swap it in? Good stuff.
  • For a 4 speed swap you could keep that bellhousing, but upgrade the clutch from the finger style to the diaphragm style.
  • I found a great place in Denver for a lot of the generic weatherstrip - see my Pig thread. For the specific stuff - SLOCruiser is your hook-up!
the 4 speed and 3 speed bellhousing are not the same. you can use the fly wheel and clutch stuff. but dont mix and match 4 speed and 3 speed clutch stuff. Use one or the other. I used a 2f fly wheel and clutch in my 3 speed fj40. I wanted to swap a 4 speed with a 3 speed transfercase eventually but I didnt get around to doing it before I traded it for my fj55. I aplologize for all the comments!

Looks like an overdrive hanging off the lever in the cab?

Can anyone ID what kind by looking at it?

Yeah that is the speedo cable. I am pretty sure it is an overdrive just wondering if anyone can identify it. It attaches to this lever on the transmission hump.

I tried shifting at speed in 3rd gear and it just takes in it out of gear. I need a second set of hands to operate it while I am under the rig. I'll clean it up and see if there are any markings. At first I assumed it was some aftermarket PTO. But a little research says, Warn, Husky, Fairey were all popular in the 70's.

So it’s a Hone over drive. @Living in the Past for the win! Found some good info on the Hone Overdrives in the 40 section. It’s down the list to get working. Seems like a great thing to revive if possible. Could be easier than a 4 speed swap, but it is way down the list to get up and running.

I think this semester we’ll get after everything below the frame:
  1. Brakes
  2. Suspension
  3. Go through the axles
  4. Steering
  5. Tires and wheels
  6. Undercarriage and frame
Second semester we will attack the interior.

Down side of the Hone OD it's only on the rear driveshaft and can only be used in 2WD. I do not know anything about the Home except what it looks like from the outside. While the Fairey changes the input to the transfer case and and be used in 4WD it has a bunch of needle bearings. Would think it would more prone to failure behind a V8 and lockers or tires with good grip. The split transfer Fairey replaced the back of the case and used ball bearings. Never a late split transfer case Fairey but H55F still has parts support and probably would be a better option.

And the hand crank !! Teach the class starting with that.

You might want to keep that a theoretical lesson as opposed to a practical lesson. One backfire and that's a broken arm. Not trying to be Debbie Downer but that's a serious concern. On the practical side though, it's a great tool to use when you just need to move the engine without cranking it; like adjusting the valves.

Please post a video if you do. Did these hand cranks come on any FJ40s?

My son and I scrubbed and scrubbed today. Just trying to get the Pig stye smell and grime out. We pulled the mats today, hit everything with a bucket/sponge bath of warm water and dawn dish soap and a good vacuuming. The front floor boards are pretty solid but lots of surface rust, the rear is in better shape. We will stop the rust, weld up any holes and likely spray in some raptor liner or similar if the weather allows. It gets COLD in Montana, winter is almost here. ;)

All the glass cleaned up nice. We will need a windshield and new rubber all around. Been reading the FAQ resource thread trying to get a parts list for the rubber.

A few parts I am going to hunt down:
  • Xfer case shifter boot, I have the metal ring but no fabric.
  • Xfer case knob
  • 1 window crank
  • Dome light lens. I have the housing but no lens.
  • OEM tool roll? I assume there was one? I have a strap that seems factory under the passenger seat?
  • 1 Rear seatbelt buckle side, I have the tab side. (Appears there was a fire and the rubber floor mat got eaten with the seat belt buckle).
  • Non bent rear bumper ends (or we will fab a new bumper/s) I have a 60 series set around the shed I may modify.
There is a lot of things going well. We will get it registered tomorrow and apply for vanity plates :bounce:

Hoping for:

IRONPIG
IRONP1G
FJ55
FJ55PIG
OINK OINK
55OINK

Well see what's available. If you have other plate ideas, let them rip.

Soap on everything today…

What type of jack holder was used in the FJ55 8/69-9/73? I have the style used in the early FJ45LP-B and one from a 69 FJ55. Those are stout.
I’ll snap a pic. Looks like an exhaust clamp that is hinged.
