Made some progress tearing things down today and learning about D60 axles. Pulled the calipers and discovered the driver's side axle was sticking out a good inch compared to the other side. It also had about 1/4" of play in/out while the passenger side did not. Drained the nasty fluid, no chunks of gear found so that is good. Looks to be an ARB, also the part number on the ring gear comes up as a Motive Gear 5.38 gear set. Back to the axles, I pulled the driver side and found the bearing completely wasted. I need to pull the passenger side tomorrow. I will say those axles are no joke, massive, 30-spline. Still more to learn and figure out here; I am leaning toward keeping this setup as it just makes sense since it already has the gears and ARB air locker.

Before I got into the axle I mounted one of the wheels on the rear tire carrier, definitely looks better with a big tire back there.

I guess they are Ford 9” style axle housings and that is the bearing assembly they use. I pulled the other side and found a different bearing setup, it looked to be a sealed bearing. I am going to send some emails off and see what I can come up with for proper replacements. I have to drill and break that retainer with a chisel, what a chore. I started drilling today and gave up, that is not soft steel.

Does anyone know if an ARB feels notchy when you rotate an axle shaft? I can feel the gears in the ARB rotating (not the ring and pinion) when I spin a shaft. I have never noticed this before in other vehicles.

A common way of removing those collars is grind/zip cut and then chisel, just have to cautious not to nick the axle 😱
