nice...but which cruiser will you take to Logans run?

Bring the Turdle!! Seems like you did very well on the 60 purchase Dave, very cool. Think of how much more stuff you can take camping now. I'd carry a spare set of rear brake shoes, just in case, you know how that cross Karma can get ya.

Nice work Dave! That's quite a transformation. You've had this thing a week or so and already have it looking and running great.

Don't blink, this won't be a long drawn out thread. Dave does not waste time getting his rigs to an envious state.

Tonight I re-cleaned the gear oil off of the rear shoes. I'll probably die of cancer now, but I did scuff up the friction material with some sandpaper to make sure it was oil free. Unclogging the axle vent solved my axle seal leak. I can confirm this without a doubt. New wiper blades and I re- rigged my EGR plug and got rid of the golf tee. The truck ran well up and
down I-485 at 70 mph. One bit of sad news... The transfer case is steadily getting noisier. I think a swap is in my future...and I thought I had that problem solved...oh well.

Love what you have done with your rig!

Dent in the rear/pass panel? I've got something similar, gonna try to inflate a football inside and see if it pops out!

Also love your avatar! brings back memories of all the hours of fun I had with my Evel Knievel Motorcycle!! (I wonder if my parents still have it in a box somewhere)

You going to rebuild or swap in a new one?

Nice clip! It summarizes my feelings exactly. I don't know, Sam. Rebuild or swap? I've not ever dug into a transmission or transfer case before. I'm a tad gun shy about it. I have pulled and re-installed several transmissions over the years. I know that I can get another trans/case for cheaper than the transfer case rebuild kit. The big question is whether the used trans/case I get will be any better than what I've got already. It's a crap shoot. I'd love to hear some opinions on the subject. To be honest, I'm not totally sure if the problem is in the transmission or the transfer case. I'd love for somebody local to give it a listen and help me to isolate the noise to one unit or the other.

If I do the swap, I need to pull the trigger on the new transmission within the next week or so. I have a guy waiting for me. The trans is at Marshall's place (Trollhole). From what I understand, Marshall sourced an engine for the guy and the trans was attached. Marshall separated the trans and installed the engine. Supposedly the trans is good but nobody really knows for sure. What would you guys do if you were in my situation? Anybody want to offer to help me rebuild a transfer case? I hear it can be done in the truck but I don't know if that is truth or fantasy.

Terrain Tamer has a video on their website of a transfer case rebuild. I am like you and have left that kind of work to someone who had done it before.

Now to egg you on, an H55 and split case would be verrryyyyy nice ;)

If you rebuild the t case, have you looked at a re-gear as well? Be a good time to put in AA 4:1, especially if you go
the 5 speed route. You do know how to run a polisher, I'll give you that

H55 and re-gear sounds great BUT I've only owned this rig for a little over a week. It has only gone 80 miles. I need some real seat time to bond with it to determine if it is something I want to start dumping money into. I'm a cheap SOB and Lord knows I have enough projects already! For now, I'd like to just baseline it and enjoy it for a while in stockish form. If I fall head over heels in love with it then maybe I'll loosen the purse strings and throw some cool parts at it. My low budget approach is part of what makes me think I should just do a whole trans swap. That way I am not tempted by the "might as wells." Only catch to doing a swap is if the trans I swap in is in poor condition as well. FWIW the guy who has the donor trans says he'll refund my money if it turns out to be bad. At that point, though, it becomes less about money and more about my labor and precious time. Decisions....decisions.....

OK, given the refund piece, go for the transmission / transfer swap. Throw a HAMOM and I'm sure we'll get it swapped in time for Logan's Run. If it turns out to be bad, you'll have the original out of the truck and can perform a rebuild on it on a bench (or farm it out ...)

I'll come drink your beer and egg you on ! ;)

Sounds like a plan, Sam. Now I just need to get the trans. Anybody want to MUD ship a trans from Greenville, SC to Charlotte for me?

Gabe and I have done a couple 40 series cases without issue. We've even swapped low range gears out of older cases. How hard can it be? I'll help.

("Hey y'all, watch this" moment in the making)

Dave, if someone can get the T-case to me I can get it up to you.

How has the transfer case gotten "louder and louder" after only 80 miles? If the noise really is getting louder over that short of a time frame, then it's going to blow up, not wear out.

Put at least one tank of gas through it before deciding whether or not the drivetrain needs to be replaced

Johnny,

I thought I had the case issue figured out. I think wrenching on the output nut to check its tightness must have put the transfer case in happy mode...either that or the skid plate was rubbing and making it sound extra loud. It was quiet as a mouse driving in and out of my driveway. After some time on the road it is back to where it was pretty much. It may very well blow up! It sounds like a bad bearing to me. I wish somebody could take a listen and help me determine what's up with it. The noise resonates through the transfer case shifter. It is especially loud on and off throttle. Downshifting makes it really whine. It's not fun to drive this way. A tankful of gas is not too much to ask for but it's pushing it!

The fluid looked fine. No chunks. It was new fluid though. PO must have had the idea to change it hoping it would improve things (as did I). Nope.
