I believe if you off center the axle with too many shims from top to bottom, then the axle will wear on the seal either top or bottom. Marlin's double lip seals help with stopping any leaks due to this. The seal is in a fixed spot, so if you move the axle either way, it might wear on the seal.

EDIT....That said, I'd wing it and figure on changing the seals when repacking the birfs./bearings every couple years.
Marlins seals ordered last night and I assumed that’s where exactly they shine.

Thank you!!

Wasn’t meaning to question you ability or plan, just something I found not fun. Went through the process going from small-pattern to large-pattern knuckles a couple of times where you have no starting reference 😉
Oh I 100% didn’t feel that way. I appreciate the feedback since I’ve not had my baptism until just now. 😜

The people loosing sleep over inner axle seal wear due to a couple .00” knuckle shims are the same people checking the torque on their recovery hook bolts.🤭

You never see anyone doing the ‘real‘ math on centering.

On a part time axle with locking hubs, nothing turns in 2WD, so center or no center , there is no load on the seal. Hubs locked, the odds are against you being somewhere where you’re going to be driving in a straight line for any distance. And when your wheels are turned, the birfield, clipped into the spindle, puts nothing but lateral forces on the front and back of the seal that far exceed the resting weight of an uncentered axle.

Sooo, I’m in the same camp as @scrapdaddy: I install Marlin seals on EVERYTHING and just plan to revisit them occasionally as a badge of pride: a serviced axle that eventually leaks is a sign of a vehicle that gets ACTUALLY USED.😊

Love the attention to detail but the way you keep that shop really pisses me off everytime I step into mine. Your truly creating a work of art, nicely done!
Thank you! I appreciate a clean working environment more than most and the fact it’s a media blasting business makes it a constant cleaning position for one of my employees. His shop name is Mr Clean!😂

I have been very fortunate to have gotten to where I am shop wise and it also doesn’t hurt to start out like this…I operated here for about 6 years with no floor paint and it stayed dustier than now.

Sheesh, well that doesn't help!!!!
If I may ask what are the dimensions of the shop? I am planning on a 70' x 80' barn this spring to store and work on the projects once we move. Keep posting your excellent work I am learning a ton here.
