That would be closer to running one of a BBX but still not it.
Honesty if your going to run low pressure see if you can grab a turbo off a 1hdfte, stick a supra comp cover or get your stock one machined to fit. 360 thrust washer and your good for 20lbs. Get it balanced of course.
BBX? Is this the gturbo Bad Boy Extreme?

If the one I posted is of decent quality and could run say 10-15 pounds SAFELY would it be much of an upgrade over stock? Ie spool quicker?

Again, sorry for the dumb ass questions. but Id rather ask a dumb question to people in the know that arent financially motivated, than make a dumb mistake

If you can pull the turbo off, it is super easy to do it yourself. If you've got something else you can drive why not make it a small project for yourself? You'll get to learn about your truck and you'll save yourself $1400 easily. I run my stocker at 17-18psi right now.

rebuild your turbo it's pretty simple .. I mean you are only replacing seals and small stuff ..

Special tools needed .. torque wrench as much ..

I'm pretty slow worker myself .. so It took me a day to remove the turbo, and another day to put it back on, add another day to work on the turbo itself.

Note: my work day start sat after mom arrive from office to take care of my kit, so 2 PM or so, and ends at 8 top .. ( decent time not to bother my neighbors ).

Bump to the top.
Interesting R&D Karter.
Might be interested in trying 1 when your done / ready.

Hamo

Hind sight I should have made completes. It's a future goal that I hope to make happen at a fraction of the cost to other alternatives.
Have a few headed down south for some R&D. Fast spool turbine housings going on them.

Sort of on this topic. I've been helping another engineer out with re-turboing his MR2. Anyone got good A/R measurements for the twin-scroll housing used on those?

Housing numbers are 74020 thru 74040. Standard 52/68mm turbine wheel I think.

Currently working on another turbine wheel design. It's the next step and I am ready.

As for the smaller turbine housings. Smaller aspect for example going from a 8cm2 housing (1hdt) down to a customized 6cm2 housing that fits the stock turbine wheel. Spool up will definitely be faster, joy is it is a direct change over to the stock turbo with no modifications as it's made for the stock wheel.

Couple that with the billet upgrade it's going to be a killer combo.

Yes it isn't clocked properly. This is the first proto. A forum member will be running this hopefully in the following weeks.

As always I welcome others to add turbo comparisons and everything to this thread. I think it could be potentially renamed though.

So that's the stock 1HD-T housing on the right? What is the number on the flange? I thought they were 58020, but that's the much smaller item shown on the left. Do you have radius to go with the area measurements?

@Dougal the housing on the right is a 17020. It actually is from a JDM 1HD-FT.
Even then the 1hd-fte turbos run a supra compressor wheels and a smaller sized turbine in that same 58020.
The 58020 is actually physically smaller than the 17020 its noticeable when you compare the two. Maybe hard to tell in the photo. They have different casting shapes also. I am unsure how I can accurately get a clean solid measurements on the things. I'll see what I can do.

Either way, I have a setup going on a manual 1hd-ft hopefully in a few weeks time and after May one going on a 1hd-t auto.
Should be a cool comparison and I am excited to play with some of this. Anyone else who's interested pm me.

Thanks, but the bit above you mean the 58020 is smaller than the 17020?

Are they both round port?

To measure them, force some modelling clay or plasticine into the inlet, then cut it off square about the point it is square to the centre-line. Then dividing up that area into cm squares would do.
The radius is from the shaft centre to the centre point of that area you've measured above.

Assuming I am off tomorrow I will see if I can find some plasticine. Might be able to find some playdoh but that may pose a challenge in town.

And yes I mean 58020 is smaller than the 17020 woops.

I recently installed the cold side setup on my truck. I was going to use the turbine housing as well but my turbo guy advised me that it was too tight and he couldn't guarantee that with thermal expansion it wouldn't touch.

My truck has come alive. From 2000rpms to 3500rpms it is a completely different truck. Boost comes on hard and very fast. I'm running a max boost of roughly 1.7 bar and 650*C egt. Would highly recommend this setup.

Here's a quick video of my spool on the freeway.

I have a few others that I am just waiting to pipe up. Keep the results and comparisons coming. I would really like to change the name of this thread....

Very nice Mudgudgeon, thanks for sharing!

I have one of Karters sets and i'm looking to get a rebuild kit shortly. Now i'm a bit lost on what to get. Do i need a carbon or dynamic seal? And i see kits advertised for ct26 small/ct20b. Are those the right ones? They come with a 360 degree thrust bearing, but i'm not sure if it's the right kit.
Here's an example:
Toyota CT26 Small 360 Degree Turbo Repair Rebuild Kit Landcruiser Complete Delux

Thanks in advance
Mark

You do NOT want the ct26 small... CT26 from a 7MGTE supra or Landcruiser (there is probably other applications too) my turbo from 1hdt had a dynamic seal. I honestly dont know if they are interchangeable though.
