I think he meant welding it while it’s in place.

Not welding it into place
I see. I couldn’t do that, either. There isn’t enough room. Thanks for clarifying that. I wasn’t understanding.

The crossmember is done and ready to go back in. It is fully welded and adjusted a bit with the press to align with the frame.

Finally. I should be able to take it for a spin later today.

I thought that I would provide a brief update. I finally got the transmission cover on and all of the wiring tied up, etc. I modified my parking brake handle to increase my throw, but then I inadvertently decreased my leverage in the process. Math is hard. I have a stuck caliper on the rear axle and the seals are blown so I will need to replace that before I can take it for another test drive. I may experiment with increasing the parking brake leverage at the calipers while I am in there, otherwise I will take the transmission cover back off and add more leverage below the parking brake handle. My parking brake handle pulls up two clicks and it feels completely hard.

On a positive note, another emblem arrived and it looks great! I have one more coming for the right rear corner. I didn’t order the emblems for the apron as they won’t fit there anymore so I might just leave that clean.

Once I get the brakes sorted out, I would like to switch gears and fab the seat brackets, then I will finish the cage and move to other punch list items. Somewhere in the mix I will drive it to the upholstery shop to get sized for a soft top! I should be on track to have this thing in the dirt by the end of spring.
