Steering gear box rebuild

You mean stick it in a vice then smack the arm with double hammers at the same time without using a puller? If so then 😲
Yes, sort of... I held mine down low, like around knee or shin height so I could swing my 2.5lb hammers like pendulums, which increased my odds of hitting the pitman arm at the steering box connection simultaneously, which is crucial to getting it to pop off. It literally popped off.

NO WAY! No videos? Come on now :flipoff2:

Probably better that I didn't film it as it would most assuredly have resembled this.

I couldn't get the power piston bolt off so I ordered a reman from parts geek and it's pretty crappy. Ended up returning it and I just ordered a used oem that looked to be in decent condition from eBay.

wasnt there a company somewhere that rebuilds these?... Id rather have someone do it and possibly upgrade (if possible) at the same time...

Can anyone tell me what orientation the input shaft seal goes in? I’ve scanned through this entire thread and haven’t been able to find it. Mine has an open side and a solid side. Which side goes against the bearing?

IIRC, the open side faces the interior of the box.

Thank god, I just got all of those stupid balls in and I was going to be really mad if I had to take it back apart. Same goes for the others shaft seal as well? I looked at it closely when taking it apart and it appeared to be open side out.

Do you really have all of 'em? lol

Barring appropriate conjecture to the contrary, carry on. I too recall something appearing that way, but when the new seal went back in it was 'solid side out'. Which makes sense.
What brought you to decide to diy rebuild?

30$ seal kit vs 400$ Box lol
Guessing the box just leaked?
If you had to do it again, would you? How much less time do you reckon it would take?

Yea I’d do it again. Only took me about an hour for the removal, 2.5 hours for the rebuild, and we’ll see about the install, but my guess is that won’t take much time either. I’d do it again if need be, but I wouldn’t enjoy it lol.

Redhead seems to me to be the best. YMMB

Yea but they have no stock, so you have to send yours in to be rebuilt. I would have considered it if I had a spare box but I didn’t want to be without my land cruiser for that long, especially since my wife won’t let me build out the gx460 yet lol

Did you call and verify their stock? I thought the same and was mumbling something about the downtime and when I could do the work and she said they had my box in stock. There was a core charge that is refunded when your core is received. They give you like 60 days or so to get the core back in. I think the price was $250 for the core. I kept mine and will send it back for a 105 shaft and overhaul in a few years.

After 2 weeks I got my order, did unpack and found the 4 teflon seals inside and they fit, YAHOO!!
Most of the other rings and seals where from another type of gearbox I think. Don't know what I did wrong but for me it's ok, I have what I need and started to fix the gearbox.

For those who didn't put a teflon seal on this kind of device, this is what my mecanic (old guy) did.

1, Throw the seals in a plastic cup within a layer of steering oil, drowning them, after a couple of minutes stretch them a little with the hands and throw them back and wait a day.
2, Put them around he shaft and work/stretch them SLOWLY and GENTLY with a thin pick on the first spot for the seal (don't know the name of the pick but a dentist have the same thing but luckaly they're pick is smaller, lol)
3, Keep moving the seal to the last spot on the shaft and pick the next seal till you have all 4 sitting where they belong. Than leave the shaft for a cup of coffee or a beer, let the seals shrink a little for a couple of minutes.

Now they are still stretched and your officially need a tool to shrink them again, DO NOT JUST PUSH THE SHAFT IN! you'll break them for sure.
If you look close to the inside where the shaft needs to go, you'll see that in the beginning it first slopes a bit, it's not a sharp edge.

4, Put some steering oil where the shaft needs to go and also on the edge.
5, Put the shaft in up untill the first teflon seal and GENTLY press and turn a bit, it'll slide in.
6, Gently turn a bit and try the next seal.
7, Gently turn again and,.. slowly take the shaft out again, you'll see that they shrunk a bit compared to the other 2
8, Put more oil (see point 4) as you'll notice it's getting a bit dry
9, Try the rest and keep in mind, GENTLE and SLOWLY and keep the steering oil coming, it'll be fine :D

This is how we did it. Car drives good again and no more troubles!! (exept that I had to change the oil seal for the driving shaft.. yes the one behind the pully for the timing belt... AGAIN... but it's good now lol)
Hey mate,

juzt about to do mine and had a look at all the available kits at Rockauto.
However, none of the images show the four teflon rings that sit on the input shaft.
Do you remember which kit you bought?

Also later in this thread someone mentions that a "kit from Rockauto" didn't contain them.

PS: Thanks everyone for this greatly detailed thread. Splendid work :)

The upper (smaller) Teflon rings in the regular kit will not work, the are slightly too big, unless something has changed. Order them directly from Toyota, if you must, but they are pricey too.
I have never replaced the upper rings and have had no issues with the 1/2 dozen or so I've rebuilt.

Just in case I break them somehow:
Would you have the part numbers? I can't seem to find them in my HDJ80 diagrams. Only the ones in the kit.
