The later model split case will work. The kits are different since the input bearings are different sizes.
I have both kits in stock.

So 2 bearings are different, one needle bearing and one roller bearing, correct?
These are the only differences in the common rebuild kits?
Which case are the strongest?
I guess there isn't any difference in strength worth mentioning.

Only the input bearing is different iirc. The roller bearings between the input gear and main shaft are identical.
The front bearing retainer is different as well.

Will my 83 H55f work together with my 87-89 vacuum operated split case? From what I have read here I would think so.
Looking at h55f rebuild kits I mostly find post 85 h55f rebuild kits. What's the difference here between pre and post 85 h55f transmissions and could I use a post 85 rebuild kit on my 83 transmission?
Any special tools I would need, anything to look out for?
I don't have a press, could it be done without one?

Sure is an 83 5spd you have? Norway only got a few in late 84 and then more in 85 and on.
Never heard of pre 84 h55f.

From the fsm, rebuilding the h55f looks like quite the job, involving a few rare tools, witch probably can be made...
Read up on the manual, before throwing parts at it. I'd consider buying a new one, if you're planning on keeping the truck for a few miles more.

New one are just to many thousand of dollars to spend, especially with the price tag we got on things here Pål.
My donor truck for the H55f were sold as a 84 model in late 83 and yes it came with the H55f new from factory.

Tossed too much money on my truck to not keeping it for many, many miles more :green:

I remember Georg saying he seen record of the H55F as early as 1978... My young memory is aging quickly however...

I'm sure this is the place to get my question answered...it may be a dumb one! I have a Canadian spec 1986 HJ60 with 5 speed manual (H55F). I have just rebuilt the transmission without any snags - thanks to all the great info and contributors on IH8MUD. The transfer case is giving me an issue however - the rear output shaft was worn so I replaced the bushings in the high and low range gears and purchased a new shaft from an American site. The shaft was listed as a replacement for '81 and later T-cases. Here's the issue - the new shaft is roughly 1" longer than the original - the extra length is behind the low range gear, so that the splines extend well past the pinion flange when it is installed. Are there different spec output shafts between US (4 speed) and Canadian (5 speed) transfer cases - if so I'm a dope for not checking, just assumed they would be the same?!

Well yes, there is a change, in early and late transfer, as far as I know.
The idler shaft is 34mm in early vs 38mm on the later. The change is around 84/85, so you probably got a output shaft for the early ones.

There should be a letter/number code on the transfer case, near the side pto cover, that will also clarify what case you have.

You probably got an output shaft that is meant to be used with a transfer case e-brake. Yes, some split cases did come with an e-brake like the old t cases had. Unless you source all the other parts for the e-brake you can not really use that shaft.

you might be able to trade someone for the right shaft- some guys really want to stick an ebrake on thier split cases. the other option would be to obtain a split case ebrake and run it...

Yes the shaft you received is 40 he breaks it up. It will not work. Hopefully can return it to the vendor and exchange it for the right one. I have the proper shafts in stock if you need them.

I also stock the transmission and transfer case rebuild kits and lots of parts to go along with them .........

Thanks everyone for your input......I guess the only good news is that the screw up wasn't on my end.....now it's just a major pain in the butt to get the exchange carried out!

Hope it works out.

I probably have a good used one if you need it let me know. I will make you a good deal on it.

I was following this thread with interest for the reproduction FJ40 top cover for an H55 transmission. Did anyone ever reproduce one with 3d printer for sale? Otherwise does anyone know where I can purchase one?

I think the real question is has anyone verified if the 60-series cover internals (rods, forks, etc.) are the same as the 40-series cover internals. If they are the same, just in a 180° opposite orientation, then manufacturing the 40-series top cover would be a whole lot easier, either from scratch or by cutting and rewelding the shift post in the 60-series cover. If anyone has a spare 60-series cover for cheap, I'll take it.
