Nature of the transmission!

I did a FJ60 15 years ago and it’s still there but noticeably better after 20k miles especially when the weather and the transmission is warm or the truck has been driven recently. My 373k kilometer HZJ73 H55 shifts like my 78’ 40! I plan on trying some RedLine Shockproof gear oil in both soon, works wonders in VTwin race bike transmissions!

Hoping to get @cruisermatt to put one in my FJ40 in the near future, I could use a little overdrive and lower 1st gear never hurts on the trail!

GAH! lol. I had a new H55 installed on my 60 to replace my, smooth as 'buttah', 44 only to try to decrease RPMs at 65MPH. I never got to test drive it before it was shipped. I'm hoping I don't regret it.
No regrets! It makes them a different truck, IE enjoyable ( tolerable to passengers ) on the highway!

Your 4 speed was smooth as butter.
Honestly, if Paul hadn’t killed that tranny too, I would’ve swapped the 4.11 to 3.70 gears and kept rocking your gracious gift.

Paul has gotten help though and is done with murder…

Yeah, that was a two finger 4 speed. Betty arrives on the 20th...I hope I don't have to use all 5 fingers to get her to 5th! :D

It’s Your 6th finger that will enjoy it the most 😉

I have a notchy 3rd gear from what I'm pretty confident is a worn 3rd gear synchro ring. I've used Royal Purple, Redline MT-90 and AMSOIL's "Manual Transmission Fluid" (which is a GL4/GL5 oil so it's good for both the tranny and the tcase) and while all three were far better than normal cheap gear oils, the AMSOIL was the biggest improvement. Especially in extreme cold before the transmission warms up.

I shill AMSOIL a lot here so I need to reiterate that I'm not associated with them in any way. Just a very impressed (and happy) customer.

Yeah, at first I was a bit wigged out by it, now I just send it. Barely notice it, but make it a game to get the timing perfect.
The oil was clean of metal when I drained it from the donor. Not really worried as it's my 4th transmission on this truck in 6 months.
Getting that timing just right for a butter smooth shift helps in the long run too with minimizing gear wear.

Honestly it's probably negligible, but hey, every little bit

Making a game of it is a game I make of it.

H55F will be more notchy than a H42, the notchiness is inherent in the transmission. Besides the H55F has been installed in a road legal tractor and was designed to be driven as such. Between the FJ40 and FJ60s I've had one H41, 3 H42s, and 3 H55Fs, the H55Fs all had that notchiness.

Well said. My comments earlier were more from an observational perspective. The pros of having a 5th gear and a lower first gear far outweigh the minor adjustment on how I row through the gears.

This is probably the conclusion most come to when an H55f becomes a reality.

My H55F is a little notchy too, especially going to 2nd when cold. Once it warms up things smooth out to where it’s not objectionable. I went from my well worn (comfortable like old boots) 4-speed in my 40 to a fairly new H55F in my 60. Well worth having 5th gear and being able to keep up in Houston at highway speeds.

Hello All, Just a quick update. I switched my h55 transmission gear oil over to redline MT90 last week. The transmission has around 2800 miles on it so far, purchased this brand new from @cruiseroutfit . I have put approximately 300 miles on since the oil change and it definitely shifts a bit better. Ambient temperatures ranged from 20F to 55F.

Mine was incredibly notchy new, but after running Redline MT90 and driving it behind LS power on the highway for 14 hours straight she's shifts pretty smooth now!
