I have a 1990 FJ62 and need a new transmission, so I thought I'd explore switching to a H55f. The quotes I've received locally (reputable Cruiser shops) are in the $10-$15k range. Does this sound right? Of course I was hoping it would be half that.

IMHO the clunk could very well be the transfer input gear on the tailshaft of the trans having wear.
McNamarra? gear was made to "fix" this, Georg sells a long gear also
yup, based on all the info here im pretty sure thats it, but at this point, due to poor prioritization and addressing other things on the truck, I think im going to wait to address the transmission/driveline all at once instead of piecing things together to buy time on the auto

I also forgot to add, when out there on the road long enough, sometimes the transmission begins to hunt for 3 and 4 on the freeway - so another sign its on the way out.

You might consider adding some Lube Guard. The black bottle. I’m not really a proponent of additives in general, but my buddy swears by it and I guess it’s pretty well regarded in the transmission rebuild industry… which he began in when we were in college 30 years ago. You prob don’t have anything to lose, and maybe you can report if there’s any real world benefit.
