I have both covers here. Just need to find the time to put them next to each and compare them really well.

Ok.
Here's a pic of both covers.
4 out of the 5 shift rails are identical. The 5th rail ( at top of cover ) should be "useable" but the cup the shifter goes into is shaped differently. I would have to completely disassemble both of these to figure that out.

Georg:

Maybe you can answer this.

What's the purpose of the shim under the bearing race in the split case? Are all shims the same width, or is this something that is selected with the case when it is manufactured? Is there a problem mixing and matching parts from multiple cases, due to this shim? Or should the shim just be kept with the case half it came with?

Naturally I ask because when I took my T-case apart I couldn't find the shim, so I figured maybe this one just didn't have it. Of course now that it's back together, and I was cleaning up some of the used old parts I found the shim, so I'm wondering if I need to pull it back apart just to put that shim back in... It shifts and spins just fine by hand, but of course I haven't started the engine up yet to load up any of the geartrain.

The shim under the bearing race is there to set the preload. Very important. If it was there, but now is not with the same bearing, the bearing preload is too low.

And that's not good at all.

Exactly. Shim sets preload on the output shaft bearings.

I have shim packs if you need some ......

Georg @ Valley Hybrids & Cruiser Brothers

they are not cheap ( when you start buying several of them to have more options ) but still available ( were at least 2015 ) from Toyota ..

If you rebuilt with koyo bearings chances are you don't need any other Shims. Kinda like resetting to factory.

If the preload is correct now, it will be too tight if you put in a shim. Measure the preload before removing the rear bearing retainer. (No need to open the case).

I have 2 co-pilots!!!!
