Hey Ron, have you tried to put the clip on the back side of the door lock cylinders since you sprayed the lizard skin inside? I'm trying to decide if it will still fit or if I need to block off a space around the inside of the lock hole so I can still attach the clip

No I haven't. I have to wait until everything is painted, but will probably need to clean the area off. If I had thought of it, like you, I'd put some tape there before spraying. Don't forget the window tracks, too.

That's going to be awhile. Painting got knocked back to late Spring. Nothing I can do it about, but wait. It's not like I'm all caught up, so I'll use the time to my advantage.

I like the idea of fresh, cool air going to the motor and you can't get much better of an air filter, than Toyota's. After a couple attempts at intake tubing, I got it right and now the fan hits the Cobra Head intake. I always knew it would be close and I was right, so now I need a different fan. Someday!

Started playing with the a/c mounting. I'm going to say, it will fit, BUT, not without some concessions. The Old Air system is smaller in length and depth, but higher than the Restomod system.


Where I'm having issues is the depth. If I center the unit, it will hit the twin sticks, so I moved to the left, until it clears. It just clears the transmission shifter, but I have to raise the unit some, to clear the boot. The height is tight also and will need to rebuild the lower part of the center dash, so the vents will fit, if that makes any sense.


I thought about putting the whole unit in the pass. side foot well, but my Wife might not understand.


I could and probably will, redo the twin sticks, make some new ones that are bent to come up alittle forward, just in order to center the system. There is going to be much more head scratching, to finish this, than I first thought.


So, what do you think, does it look right, where it is or should I center it.

I was just reading J Mack post about the restomod's depth. Seems I was wrong, I had them turned around. At 7.125 inches wide, it will fit very nice. Alittle long, but I might take the Old Air back.

My tape measure told me that the OldAir unit was a very tight fit in my rig and your photos confirm.
The unit I ordered will also be a tight fit but should go further back and up and clear your shifters.
Half my parts arrived Friday so I’m expecting the rest to show soon, I will take pictures for you when it gets here.

I already took it out and boxed it up, going back Monday. The Restomod unit is quite abit higher in cost, but seems well worth the extra money. Did you buy their vents, also.

Man, it's nice to have you two hammering this out before I have to even purchase my AC. Now I just need detailed pics on the final installations, vents, condensors, etc. and the ac will be a cake walk for me . Seriously though, hope this doesn't give you much more trouble, and I cant wait to see how it turns out.

Things like this, usually takes me a few attempts, before I get it right. The restomod system seems to be the way to go. I was just looking at the '79 Chris posted about in the classifieds and it has the stock a/c in it. Huge system, between the heater and ac, no room at all under there. For my wagon, a modern system is far better. I'm sending the Old Air back and going to order the smaller Restomod.


This will hold me up for awhile, glad I have a couple other things to do on it.

That's exactly the system I have, except the dial is on the wrong side, since a RHD unit.

I regret going to the extent I did to keep this aspect OEish and should've sought the more compact system y'all are discussing, possibly with an updated control board.

Hindsight's 20/20.....feel like I'm too far down the road to turn back now.

Would any of the aftermarket systems be adaptable to a 3FE compressor?

Have no choice but to use, since it's an integral part of the PS motor mount.

If I'm remembering my conversation correctly the tech told me that the Restomod unit would run on R12 or R134a so I would assume that it could be used with your compressor and condenser.

Yes I bought the Restomod vents and controls.

If you want to mix and match between the two catalogs you'll need to call the Texas number.

Yep, I would be surprised if there was any conflict. Switching over to 134a involves a different expansion valve IIRC.
