I really should invest in one
Yes you should when it's just the two of you alone on an adventure. We are looking at replacing our satphone with a Garmin inReach next year. The plans are more reasonable and let us send a text for help if needed, not as convenient as a phone but it is quite a bit cheaper and still a viable plan “B” when all else fails.

No, Jeri has a flip phone. I really should invest in one, but as you know, I'm not a tech guy.

SAT phone tech changes so frequently, I'm thinking of just renting one before each big excursion.

My friends and I were just talking about sat phones. Now you guys are talking about sat phone. After looking up sat phones, I will be renting sat phones.

Due to our deteriorating condition, I chose to drive across N. Dakota on Hwy.94 then will cut down to Kansas City and home. She's making huge noise in first and second gears, but running down the road nice and quite at 70/75 MPH. Camping at the Best Western in Fargo, N. Dakota tonight, would rather be at the Pig Party!

Sounds like you gotta stay on the hyway in hi gear, gonna earn that first cold one when your home...

Made it in this afternoon with her groaning bad in first and second gears and I get a notification from Glacier Park that the "going to the sun road" is now fully open. They contained the fire enough to let vehicles drive the whole road. Sure, right after we leave.

Had a great trip overall, got to drive the Bear Tooth Highway and see some glaciers and moose. Yellowstone was awesome as always and got to do so great hiking as well. Pretty peeved about the 55, can't wait to drain the trans and transfer case and see what got chewed up. I'm really not sure what's all wrong yet. She ran great down the highway with the trailer, so I'll reflect on the positive. :)

Checked mileage with a tad over 4,000 miles round trip pulling the trailer and running a solid 70/75 on the highways, wound up with a disappointing 13.5 MPG. I had plenty of power to go, but that costs on the other end. Good case for a diesel. When I ran somewhat slower 60/65 and I had stock gears in the transfer case it was easy to get over 17, but with the 4:1 low range and a different gear for high range (underdrive) must have hurt some.

Honestly, I'm really not concerned about it, more important to me is having the power on hand when needed. I was passing tractor trailers at will with plenty of pedal left. I need to see what went south in my running gear and if it's the transfer case gears, I'm going back to stock. It seems we're running around the country quite a bit more than rock climbing, so not needing the 4:1 low as much as thought, very noisy also.

Sounds to me like a trans issue (but I could be wrong). To my reasoning, if it was the t-case, it would growl all the time, not just first and second gear.
Was the tranny you installed new, rebuilt, or untouched?

I'm leaning towards the transmission, too. Brand new H55 (25,000 miles now) and Georg rebuilt the transfer case, I thought I was covered. Maybe tomorrow I'll drain everything and check for chunks.

Pretty much everyone reports the 4:1 gears are noisy.
With the 4:1 gears and H55f you have virtually no overdrive. Pull those gears out and send em to me, I’ll get rid of them for you. :)

Ever heard of the Black Box?

I believe that's what Lil' John is using. I'm pretty much set on keeping the line up I have with the PTO it would be too much to change around. I used the 4:1 gears out in Moab one year, but that was it really. Seems most of our off road driving doesn't require the low range and when I need it the stock gears would be fine. I might have to talk with Georg and order up a new transfer case, I'd rather go new than rebuilt at this point and driving 4,000 miles listening to that whine isn't too bad, but it's really loud on coast and that bugs me.

Pictures of the different drain plugs, unfortunately they didn't show up well. The Transmission oil was clear with just some metal sludge, common to see. The transfer case plug had sludge and several metal chips, the oil had a metal sheen with metal speaks in it. The PTO was the worst sludge and more chips, oil the same as transfer case. PTO was never used, so guessing transfer case has an issue.

The throw bearing looks and spins free and easy, clutch seems to work good, but will replace everything when pulled out.
