Quick update (with pictures, Bob!) Tore apart all the brake and backing plate stuff and the axle pulled right out. There is a ton of carnage, so everything will need to be replaced. Good news the axle housing is fine. I haven't taken apart the wheel and rotor to get the short end of axle out, yet. Jeri's making homemade Lasagna tonight, so I can't be late.

We talked about the inner splines at the diff. and they seem fine with plenty of contact.

Here's the snapped end...

Anyway, screw this, I'm eating. :)
Owe dat hurt🤣🤣. I made Lasagna last week, yes homemade by me 😘. Delicious 😋

Ron good to hear the housing is ok and the axle pulled easy, seems like the bearings must have started this mess?

We are just about cooling off enough for Lasagna to appear again here 😋

That's how I feel about it. A bearing went south and maybe heated the axle up enough to snap? Once I get the other end out of the wheel, I'll send some pictures to RVC and see what they can tell me.

Glad you finally got it home and the axle housing is okay. I spent half of Friday mixing and rolling pasta for lasagna. Most of the family was here so it was a big pan, took 3 batches.

It would most likely be the other way around. When everything is the way it should there is an air gap between the axle and the bearing hub, those bearings would be glowing red hot and be a problem long before you transferred enough heat into that axle to do what you did.
More likely the axle broke and that end was dragging on the inner side of the bearing hub and the heat that was created from that took out your bearings.

Holy Smokes! Look at this mess....

that is some crazy breakage, I've never seen a Cruiser spindle that broken

That is some twisting force.
Do you know how heavy those solar panels were? There a chance you were asking your piggy to do some big boy work?

Solar panels are @ 45 pounds each and I had 35 ( #1600 give or take ) of them plus the M101 trailer. I don't think it was over the top heavy for the heavy duty parts on the wagon. That said, my wagon is in itself is over the top heavy. A friend told me about another scale that will give you weights for each corner of your vehicle, so someday I'll get another opinion on the Mudhen's weight.

You have a strange wear pattern on your splines.

Get your housing checked for straightness before you put it all back together, if I need to I’ll ship you my jig and you can do it yourself.

Hey Jim, are you talking about the splines on the short piece? Last Winter when I did some maintenance I found those splines rusted and pitted. Front Range, who builds the Diamond axle said it was fine, but should have some grease on the splines.

Hey Jim, are you talking about the splines on the short piece?
Yes...
Looking at the splines that are outside the flange they still have flats, the splines that are in the flange look to be pointed like they are fretting in that hub.
Something is out of alignment for that much wear in this short amount of time, IMHO.

Since 2016 and they did email my home computer after the wheel had snapped off. I haven't gotten back with them until I had all the pieces out. Front Range in CO., they are hard to get a hold of, only emails. I can ask them to call me and they will it just takes time ( days ).

The whole wagon has less than 60,000 miles and maybe half with the Diamond axle.
