Yeah I dont think my engine had an oil cooler anyway. looking at the thermostat housing that came on the engine. It gets really hot here in the summer but I think it will be fine. I can always add it later I guess.Just caught up reading this:
1. Ditch the oil cooler. Your biggest issue 90% of the year will be getting the oil up to temperature. Oil coolers only help with tow rigs. I'd highly recommend getting a non-oil cooler thermostat housing as conversion kits like the one @ToyotaMatt sells work great, you want the extra room at the front of the engine to work on the fan blade/belt and alternator.
2. I'd clean up that carb and throw a rebuild kit at it and see if you can make it work. Otherwise, there are folks on here that rebuild carbs, though the names dont occur to me off hand. BTW, the white crusty stuff is lead. Don't expose your skin or lungs to it if possible. Edit Jim C. is a known rebuilder.
3. Valves are a booger, and it's more technique than tool. I used the overhead screw style, but it took extensive fiddling to make it work on a 2F. Basically, one arm on the compressor is longer than the other, and I put that on the lower part of the spring coil where it would fit easily, and then turned the entire tool until it got as far down on the spring as it would go, THEN I would turn the wheel on the tool to compress. Expect it to slip off several times in the process. Warm up by practicing some cuss words. It helps.
I got my H42 kit from Valley Hybrids. Fantastic customer support as well as I went through the process of the rebuild.I am wanting to put new bearings and seals in this H42 transmission. Any advice on what bearing seal kit to get?
Thank you for the kind words!!!Georg @orangefj45 and the Crew of Valley Hybrids are "salt of the earth" type of people!!
Thank you sir!!!!I got my H42 kit from Valley Hybrids. Fantastic customer support as well as I went through the process of the rebuild.
The kit had all the parts I needed.
@red66toy has a good recent write up in his thread rebuilding the 4 speed and what pullers he used to get at the bearings. Worth a read if you haven’t already read it.I am wanting to put new bearings and seals in this H42 transmission. Any advice on what bearing seal kit to get?
My magnet skills are subpar.I use a pick and a magnet.
Nice Thanks! I am still sorting the engine out but I am going to call these guys. I am thinking I want to use the 3 speed transfercase on my 4speed since my 3speed case is in really good shape and I dont know the history of the 4 speed case. The gears in the 4speed look really good and the syncros look not worn.I got my H42 kit from Valley Hybrids. Fantastic customer support as well as I went through the process of the rebuild.

I have been following along. The dream is getting one of the adapters for the 4 on the column from @red66toy. I still need to find a 3 on the column transmission top plate though.@red66toy has a good recent write up in his thread rebuilding the 4 speed and what pullers he used to get at the bearings. my favorite kind of people!Georg @orangefj45 and the Crew of Valley Hybrids are "salt of the earth" type of people!!
Thanks I will get in touch with you guys when my attention turns more to my transmission build. Looking forward to rebuilding the transmission. It will be even better to swap the 3speed out for the 4!We can certainly help! We rebuild lots of transmission and transfer cases and work strictly on Cruisers. We can also supply all the parts needed for a successful rebuilt. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

the 1F engines fill their oil from the side of the block that goes directly into the oil pan. They do not have a cap on the valve cover you take off to add oil through the top. There might be a transition year kind of thing where Toyota made a 1F valve cover with a cap on it but I am not aware of one.I am still waiting on parts and tools for the 2f. in the mean time I really want to put a 1f valve cover on the 2f. Does that require any modifications? I also want to put the older style air cleaner on. any issues doing the older style air cleaner with the 2f carb?
Additionally I pressure washed my oil pan gasket and primed and painted it yesterday. I am pretty much at a stand still till I get my gaskets and tools. I tore it apart and now I am bored haha.

And the matching nuts to hold the valve cover down. You'll want the 73-74 version with the oil fill cap on the valve cover. You'll also need the 1F rocker studs which are longer
That is good to know, I will have to add this to my to do list.Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, FJ 45, FJ 55, F Engine Valve Cover | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/234139942306?hash=item3683d3fda2:g:vgkAAOSwrXhhGGAd&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0HB9qaNhW%2FqMZ4E4pQew9oLwMwTE4XuLyS1RwIKnBetmlly2NIrX1xgLoyRga1JcXpvRUWejB9drxqz8Sn5dF5m%2Fwo7khi43OR%2FynPICBcBTCk1e3DOqk8A03YK3ft1l1DjWO4NRR3jqj0Kydk5II3%2FvJOiHF6plQeVWYSVexqnecPVRw2Qsfpqrf4hOXTCZ4MWjpLIV2R6WMLWkZ46CInSFb5hpmHaMi6FT8erXg7T4MeFLRwwdkyraKMBKdBCEnUcCHd0mTkI3oGe5LNcXiU8%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8KflaCbYw
Some of the later ones do have the valve cover oil filling. Its a later 1f 155 I beleive. I know I would not be able to put a 135 f valve cover on it and that would be the coolest one to do.
I actually would not mind that. I like that yours has toyota stamped into it. The later one with the filler I don't think has toyota stamped into the valve cover. That is good to know, I will have to add this to my to do list.
Looking at my valve cover someone took an old one and added the filler cap to the back of it. Why they put the cap on the back and not the front beats me.

You can always flip the cover around, (especially when you do your next valve clearance check). That is good to know, I will have to add this to my to do list.
