I am installing rear disc's on my '71 40. The pass. side caliper does not want to go over the rotor????
I have tried swapping the rotors side to side, took bracket off and reinstalled it, took lock-rite apart and reinstalled. tried L caliper upside down. None of witch seems to make any difference. It acks like the axle is out to far, I can not see what my problem is HELP!!


The drivers side went together great, caliper has movement in and out.

Do you have those modified washers between the bracket and the mount?
 
I'm confused then. You said it seems like the axle is out to far, but those washers move the caliper out further. So does the caliper need to move in, or out?
 
The brackets are on the inside of the mounting flange with the spacers (washers) between the two. The caliper needs to move outward about 1/8 inch. I can get it on there but the axle does not want to turn then, rubbing on the outer pad.

Thank you for your help. I am almost affraid to think this but could the housing or flange be bent????

I tried the pass. side caliper on the drivers side and it fits (up side down). All the parts seem to fit the drivers side but not the pass. side.......:confused:

Mine was a tight fit, I took a little off the pads and never looked back. It has been working for several years. Just make sure you have enough room that the offending pad doesn't heat up the rotor. Make sure you have enough clearance between the caliper and the bracket. I ground a bit on the caliper for it to clear.

I would be curious as to the real cause though...
 
AAAK!

I'm having this exact same issue as the OP. There doesn't appear to be any resolution on this so I'm bumping the thread to see if anyone has any ideas?

Why would the driver's side caliper fit fine and the passenger side be too tight to fit over the rotor???

Or just grin a bit off the pads, and call it a day.

Does your caliper have an extra tab that hits the bracket? (long shot) since I don't even know calipers or brackets you've got.
 
Read Poser's rear disk install thread. In it he talkes about grinding a little off the caliper so it fits in the bracket.
I helped a fellow mudder do it this week and had the same problem, untill I looked at his instructions. Now it fits correctly.

It sounds like the pass. side rear wheel bearing was replaced with a wider bearing, pushing the axle out abit??? Calipers have internal ratchets (that keep the pads close to the rotors as the pads wear), I originally thought one of your ratchets was adjusted out too far, but then it would have hung up on the other side as well.
 
I have already ground on the calipers to remove the 'nub' that hits the bracket. This is an issue where the axle/rotor hat sit too far out for the caliper to slide onto. It gets cocked at an angle. I've already removed some of the outer pad with a bastard file and can't seem to figure out why I'm having an issue.

I would buy the mismatched wheel bearing argument if not for the fact that I inspected the wheel beaings carefully and they are the same size. I find it very strange multiple folks have had a problem with one particular side when fitting these GM calipers to the rear axle.



I've experimented around with several different orientations of the calipers as well. I flipped left and right (to keep the bleed nipples facing up) and tried the upper and lower flange holes.

That is the problem with mine. I used the ruff stuff bracket I think I had to grind the pad a bunch and tap them down with a hammer ran it until they wore together some. Not the right way but really haven't had drama since installing about three years ago. Hope you do it right so it'll inspire me to fix it
 
Do you have the right rotors? Take more pics of the flanges etc. see my thread pic halfway down

I remember it was tricky to get them on but never ground down the pads etc

Your bracket or caliper is all cockeyed or something. I've been comparing side by side pics

Disc woes

Also check thickness of rotors at the lug bolt location. When Downey made these conversions we ran into different thicknesses of rotors, the cast rotors were thicker than the formed steel rotors. I can't imagine your supplier gave you two different thickness, but?? Just saying??
