hi mudders !

I am out of town (college station tx) helping a friend clear his lot

We were pulling trees with the LC. Big one would not come out ( was not really that big, perhaps 3 inch trunk) so i triple locked on flat concrete surface and when i pulled (in reverse) we heard something snap ! Front axle for sure

Tested moving 4-5 feet and definetly hear some metal crunch crunch.

I pulled the DS axle to investigate. All looks good

Lift PS wheel, engage in D, and it turns but at every revolution i could hear something in the differential.

Hard to describe the sound. It is not grinding, it is more like a little clunk at every turn

PS birf sounds good

I am wondering if the issue is related to the eLocker pin ? Is that something that could snap ?

Main goal right now is figure out how to get it moving so i could go back home (dallas) tomorrow

My thought right right now is to remove the front shaft, engage center dif locker , and give it a try

Thought ? Thank you so much for any help or comments you can offer

Sounds like you blew up your ring and pinion

My thought as well, but really wondering cause i honestly did not put a lot of force. Or at least that what i think- 4 Low and triple looked is putting some serious strain

If I'm not mistaken, you could remove front driveshaft, differential, both axles and to the best of you abilities "cover" the hole in your axle...might get you home.

Someone with more knowledge than I could answer if this is plausible...also instead of removing axles and whole diff you might get away with removing front drive shaft and both drive plates. Again I'm sure guys will chim in.

3x locked on dry concrete is lots of strain

3x locked on dry concrete in reverse is LOTS of strain.

Might have been fine not locked in low with 7 pin MOD moving forward

Especially in reverse, bad choice.

It is either a shattered birf or a ring and pinion.

If it is the diff You can pull the drive flanges and the front drive shaft and lock the transfer case. If it is a shattered birf the broken pieces could interfere with steering.

DS birf is ok cause i pulled that out. I hear no noise and movement if ok of PS birf so i am calling that one ok

What part specificaly are you refering as the 'drive flange' ? I dont have my manual or diagrams with me

Thanks !

This is is it (drive flange) right ? Without it it may leak some grease but i guess that would be ok ?

That is indeed the drive flange

Wrap the end of the hub with duct tape or similar to keep dirt out and grease in.

Great ! Thank you guys !!!!! I'll do that and report later

I feel you, I did something similar with my YJ. All things considered, avoid pulling on stuff in reverse. It sounds to me like your ring gear flexed under load.

Good luck!

Yes. Older toyotas used a "regular" gear config in the front diff and as a result that one was actually stronger in reverse, due to using the "correct" sides of the teeth in that situation.

Our 80s have reverse cut gears in the front that make that diff stronger going forward (than the old config).. but that means both diffs are on their weaker gear tooth faces in reverse. The front is smaller than the rear too.

Basically, if you had done what you did while driving forward you would have been less likely to break a diff.

Made it home safe and sound - no issues at all without the drive flanges and front drive shaft !

Thank you all ! now the tear down to remove the third !

What do you all recommend ? keep it OEM or is there a better ring and pinion our there ?

Also will need a recommendation for somebody in the DFW area to do the ring and pinion install. THANKS again !

Once you pull the 3rd it should be obvious what the problem is. Make sure you post back what you find. I don't know if any really good Toyo axle guys in D/FW. Lots of Jeep gear guys if you want to take that chance. You can ship them off to this guy. He's as good as it gets.
Gear Install Harrop

Ship it to Zuk for a rebuild.

Well, here it is , OUCH !!! now on its way to ZUK !!!
