Can someone post a link to these LS swap kits? What happens with the transmission and TC when you do a LS swap?

that's a clean nice looking truck
one source i like to use is bell lexus in scottsdale az, free shipping (up to $100 merch) to lower 48
they won't ship engine assembly but the price would have me seriously consider options to get it from there to wa
popped back in to say check with @Fj80oregon
he's closer to you

That is a way better price! I just got off the phone with their parts dept. And he said that is their sale price and that the blocks are backordered but an order of 10 is being sent to their ontario dc at some point. I just would have to figure out pickup and shipping and the cost for all of that.

Depends on what way you choose to go, most budget minds go 4l6x gm variant. Though there have been adaptations now for 8hp70 use in the platform and behind the LS power plant but not in conjunction in an 80 series that I know of.

Lots of guys just manual swap as well

People have done LS swaps in a few weeks, with help from buddies who have done it before, and with a minimal budget. As @mrsleeve mentioned, junk yard gen III can be purchased cheaply, with the engine harness and ECU.

Marks 4WD sells the engine mounts, and transfer case adapter.

Cheapest swap would be a 4.8L or 5.3L in front of a 4l60.

Next step up would be something in front of a 4L65, or better yet, a 4L80.

Next step up would be something in front of a 6L80e or 6L90e (my path).

Finally, LT engines in front of 8 or 10 speeds. This is new territory with a limited number of swaps done.

I believe Torfab is the only one who sells the parts for LT conversions.

On a similar note, if I do the swap myself in there somewhere I can locate a list of all the seals and whatnots I will need to do the head swap?

There's a pretty dull list of engine parts here^^^

You won't need all of this, but with this list along with part diagrams in partsouq.com you'll be able to figure out what you need.

Toyota has two different gasket kits.
One for a rebuild including replacing valve seals. Known as a VRS Kit.
And one that doesn't include valve seals.

There's a handful of 'while you're in there' seals, hoses, clips etc that aren't in gasket kits

I saved this from some thread on 'mud:

"Valve grind kit (04112-66036) is included in the engine kit (04111-66036)"

Note: shop around, 04111-66036 lists for over $657 msrp. I bought it last week for a hair over $200, with free shipping.

@Colbino I also think you ought to keep it. I've heard you mention it twice in here though that you hate to drop 8-10k and have the rig look exactly the same as before... if looks are a factor over the reality that you'll be able to drive this thing for the next 250k, then throw in a lift, a set of wheels or a fresh bumper or something. Give yourself a little reward for your hard engine work.

Or... if dropping 8-10k for stock performance is bumming you out, go the LS route. Can't say it'll be any cheaper (the little parts add up) but at least you'll have a rowdy 300+hp V8 under the hood for your efforts...

Thanks for all the various perspectives, guys. They are really eye opening.

I just got off the phone with toyota of portland and they told me that the short blocks are now backordered and cost $5900. I am going to call a few more dealerships, but the parts guy said he can see all of U.S's inventory and there aren't any showing up.

@CharlieS share where you got this amazing price?

Thank you guys again for all your insight. I am leaning towards rebuilding it myself. I do already own a cherry picker and an engine stand so now it's all about making garage space and sourcing an oem short block in my area since shipping from Arizona isn't feasible.

As for gaskets I found this, but I'm not sure how legit it is;

You want 04111-66036 as it’s a complete engine gasket kit. Also Toyota of Portland msrp for a short block is $4686 can usually be bought for $4300 not sure who you talked to over there.

Partsnext is legit I have ordered several thousand from them, they are slow to ship but have great prices, they do stick it to on shipping so I usually stay with partsouq. They both ship from the UAE.

I didn't get the guys name even though he mumbled it when he answered the phone. I will look around online today to see if I can source a block within a few hours from the seattle area.

Called around and either the msrp has gone up or everyone is marking these things up.
EDIT: Calling was a waste of time. The prices online (even through the same dealerships I called) were way better than what the parts guy quoted me.

Lexus of Fife: $5700 + tax = 6200
Beaverton Toyota: $4700
Broadway Toyota: $5963
Gladstone Toyota: $4687
Capital Toyota: $4830
Columbia Gorge Toyota: $4998
Toyota of Corvallis: $4874
Lithia Toyota: $4686

There are more dealerships in the area which I'll call but I'm not holding my breath on finding anything like the Arizona price.

With Lexus, they just add the Lexus tax to the Toyota MSRP. Don't bother unless you like paying it.

Looks like $4,686.84 is MSRP. No one is giving you a discount and some are adding a premium? Damn...

Cheapest online is $3,644.51, out of a Toyota dealership in Kansas.

Ishino Stone engine gasket set, made in Japan and more than likely the supplier to Toyota. If I remember correctly I had to buy timing cover orings, probably some other seals and gaskets but not a crazy amount. I've never bought a Toyota gasket kit so I'm not sure even if those come with all the seals and gaskets. Call around on the short block, thinking you should find one around $3750.00. personally I wouldn't use any valve stem seal that is not Viton, The valve stem seals Toyota sells for this engine will be hard as a rock in less than 100,000 miles. Timing cover and oil cooler cover can have erosion, need to clean and inspect. Also you can upgrade to a MLS head gasket, companies like Cosmetic. You can use ARP bolts for the head to block fastening.
