So i drove thru a puddle that was little bigger than I thought and my 62 shut off... The distributor and wires did not get wet... Really the driver side got wet.... It cranks but will not fire.. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance for your help!

your distributor got wet? sucked water in the intake. Start with the basics: you need air, fuel and spark for the engine to run. Check for spark. check for fuel delivery. Pull the plugs, crank the engine to push any water out, dry the plugs and re-install. cross your fingers.

take dist cap off and blow the inside out if you have compressed air source, otherwise make sure its dry.

or hose the works down with wd40.

Thanks for the replies!....I made it home after being towed by my father-in-law ..... Still wont start. The distributor appears dry and I pulled all the plugs today to let it dry out just in case..... Tomorrow I plan to troubleshoot so any comments or ideas you have are welcome.

don't assume that because the outside of the dist cap looks dry does not mean it does not have moisture inside.

When I first bought my truck (FJ60) and was driving it home and after I drove it around a while...in teh rain it would just shut off...then about 30 min later it would start right back up like nothing happened. I replaced the plug wires and dist cap....problem solved.

The spark plugs should not be an issue. I would guess from where I sit...bad wires, or dist cap.

Ok so today i switched out the distributor cap with another, put in new plugs (just cuz the old ones looked bad) and still won't start.... I checked that i do have spark. I do have a dry distributor, and i'm thinking its fuel related.... The cruiser died after driving thru a puddle that was only about a foot deep on the driver side. It splashed up and the engine shut down.... Could i have shorted something with the fuel pump??

I doubt it is water related & from your description of a quick shutdown, probally not fuel related either.

I would look for a wire that popped off when you hit the hole. Look at the coil wire.

?

Is it a 60 or 62? I checked your profile and didn't see anything in your garage. If it is a 60 and you have a Weber with the Tuna Can air cleaner they are bad about taking a sip of water in the shallowest hole.

It's a 1989 FJ 62..... I looked at the fusible links at the battery this morning.. They were dry but a sprayed some WD40 in them..... No start... Does any on have a photo of using a paper clip in the diagnostic port to see if the fuel pump is getting power?

The fuel pump is inside the gas tank. Seems like a stretch that there would be a problem with it.

You should be able to hear the fuel pump with the key on. If not, then start checking the electrical to the pump including the relay. It seems that most FP issues in 62s are electrical and not dead pumps which is good.

Ok so I got home and took off the fuel line going into the fuel filter under the hood... some fuel came out of the filter (backwash)... Then after cranking it for a couple of seconds, there was NO fuel coming out of the line........ There are four wires on the rear driverside wheel well that seem to be coming from the top of gas tank. The wires seem to be in tact.

Lehiguy.... I looked at the relays at the kick panel on the passenger side ... how do I know if the relay is bad?

Thanks!

Joel

check the wires in the drivers side rear quarter panel, I think y will find a problem there. Its a common area for problems.

Should I be looking for frayed wires or another relay?

There's a connector in the drivers side rear quarter panel - under the jack that fails/corrodes. Connects almost everything in the back of the truck including the fuel pump, power for the rear wiper, etc. Look for cracking and oxidation on the male/female connectors. You might have to cut out the connectors and reconnect the wires so do one set at a time so you don't end up with a handful of wires that you don't know how to pair up.

Thanks to all who gave ideas and suggestions... You saved me HOURS of troubleshooting!

I found ONE wire (the red one) that had corroded, in the group of four wires that goes to the fuel pump from the connector under the jack in the rear quarter panel. I disconnected that connector and used my test light. It seems that if all is good with your fuel pump relay and wiring to that connector, (and you turn the key to the on position) you will get a pulsing or intermitent power signal at that connector. Which then made me think to reinspect and remove all the electrical tape around those wires. Also, I pushed out the rubber grommet that protect the group of wires where they enter the rear quarter panel underneath the jack and inspected that area closely.

The red wire had a pin hole size cut in the outer casing of the red wire which over time had caused the wire to corrode. When I found that spot, I bent the wire and it cracked in half. BINGO!...

I soldered in a new piece of wire and it started right up! Thanks again guys!
