I wanted to get updated feedback on rattlecan paint - specifically, rattlecan that you can get made to order only. I dont want 'close' - I want rattlecan in strong blue (8b6) or nordic blue (857). Out here in the sticks of coastal Carolina, there was only one place that made rattlecans, but the guy stopped doing it when a hot pink can exploded on him..ANYHOO here's the info Im looking for if ya'll wanna help me choose a reputable place online.

<There's plenty of information regarding off the shelf rattlecans-that is NOT what Im looking for. My huz is quite fab at rattlecan jobs..so here's what I know>

www.automotivetouchup.com sells it for $20/can - but I want approximately 20 cans (plus extra for mistakes and touchups after wheeling) If their price is on par with what yalls feedback says, then so be it.:D

If youve had spraycan automotive paint made for your landcruiser
Where'd you get it?
How long have you had it on the vehicle/how has it done?

Thanks for your help!!

20 cans of any paint is gonna be hundreds of dollars. Why not just get an economically priced paint job?

Spoken by a guy with about 20 cans of rustoleum on his 40...

Yeah.... kinda what I was thinking too. I'm half way done with my off the shelf RCR (rattle can resto) and with primer, paint and clear coat I'm at about $100 into it now...
good luck :D

If youre gonna get 20 spray bombs mixed may as well buy a spray gun and get the paint in a can.... Gonna be about the same price.

I went the opposite way with the lwb 45, having done the resto paint job thing on the swb45. I bought a case of custom mixed rattle cans for the 45 in 2002. The cans allow me to keep a running truck RUNNING, and just work on things one part at a time. Also allow me to consider swapping parts if and when I get around to it. Got a 25 faux bib already painted up that I just haven't got around to installing. Also have a 66 windshield frame waiting in the wings for when I get tired of the rain coming through the vent of the 64 frame. Stuff like that.

And then there was the time I sawed out the driver's corner of the cab to repair the crushed in corner from a tree falling on the truck. Handy to blend in one little section.

I like being able to shoot WHAT I want to shoot WHEN I want to shoot it, without the set up time or the clean up time to use a spray gun each time. Sort of the same instant gratification that propels so much of society now.

And that rattle can paint job was good enough for the cover of TT and the Landcruiser calendar.:grinpimp:

I would give you the name of the store, but a) I don't remember it off hand, other than it was in Burbank on San Fernando Road, and b) AFAIK they stopped mixing them in 2005.:frown:

Thank you Mark! I dont really want to debate how I should do it and you have basicly simplified the 'whys' of my wanting to do the rattlecan custom colors..Im not asking for alternatives - just good feedback from those who have done it :D

How has your paint that youve done held up so far? Forgive my ignorance - but I personally would LOVE to see your paint job TT cover!!

The part of the cab that I did the blend job on in 2002 still looks as good as when I put it on. No clear coat either. Same for the tops of the door frames I did before I took the 45 to TX in 2006. The other parts of the truck that i have 'hit' with the can have more or less been impromptu, not enough prep, and while the paint has not peeled or flaked, it has faded. But since I was mostly shooting those parts to just keep surface rust at bay, I still consider it money well spent.:hillbilly:

I think woody has a pic of the truck on the featured rigs page.

I had 6 rattle cans made to match my somewhat odd Dune Beige paint job (I think the original paint wasn't mixed to the correct color) at Tower Paint http://www.apstowerpaint.com/ I had them match it exactly by sending in one of the kick vent doors for the match.

So far I have only used it on the spare tire carrier, but it seems to be holding up.

I have had good luck with Tower Paint.

You're talking $400+ for rattlecan paint! That's rediculous! Invest in a compressor and a cheap HVLP gun from Harbor Freight and enjoy the better results and the new skills you'll learn.

And it's only about 10 minutes of extra setup/cleanup time to use a gun vs. a spray can. The better results are worth the 10 extra minutes

I use a Devilbiss for the big stuff and then have color matched rattle cans made for doing thing as Mark (65swb45) outlined.

I have used Omni and Orr-Lat with great results. I get the paint from Andys Paint and body. He is the local supplier to all of the body shops in the area.

Had to pull one of those cans out again yesterday. Still working good.

I went to do a test install my repro tailgate from AwlTEQ yesterday and found the gate wouldn't close because my valance was crushed. Two hours of cutting, pulling, beating, welding and grinding later, i pulled out one of these now 13 year old cans of paint and layed down a 'base' coat. Still works fine!:hillbilly:
