Pulling this out of my build thread and into its own "topic". I'm having a hard time finding a used radiator for my 2F 1975 FJ55, but I suspect my scope is too narrow. I know there are new aftermarket units, but maybe you all could help me understand which OEM makes/models will drop in.

The motor is being installed into a 1974 piggy. So... what works? Will any ol' 2F radiator suffice? That would open up a huge range of years and models... Or am I looking at it wrong: would any ol' FJ55 radiator work?

Help!

@PabloCruise I do have a core, yeah. I need to find a reputable shop here in Boise and get that quoted - good call!

@bobm, if pressure testing is something you can do quick and easy then please do. If it involves taking it down to a shop then shoot me a PM so I can be sure to compensate you for your time.

55's are a different size than 40/45 rads, they are wider. 60/62 are different also.
79 55 is different also.
so I believe any 55 will bolt in other than a 79. any other will need modification to make it work, most likely some sort of retrofit to the mount.

I've a pressure tested 1F I could be talked out of for what I have invested in....

I'll throw another possibility into the mix, for conversation sake.

I think an FJ7X radiator would, damn near, bolt up and they're still available new. It's taller, but distance between mounting points is the same, use a bracket that's easily modifiable, and inlet/outlet are oriented similarly enough to work.

I can confirm later, but no so sure that an HZJ7X wouldn't fit, too, since mounting points for all early 7Xs are the same. Have a used I can compare to Pigs, and a new, late model aluminum (that it's been on my long list of things to check and contribute) to measure, as well, that I picked up on eBay for $200.00 from a military surplus seller that had several.

DAM GOOD IDEA C. waiting for the follow-up novel...

70 series option would be very, very sweet...

That'd be novella.....

I've been looking at, myself, because of either a cooling issue I'm experiencing, the symptoms an overactive fan clutch, on the Redheaded 2F ('76 2F Pig radiator and shroud with late fan, fan clutch, pulley, thermostat, water pump).

I don't know if the thermostat has a higher opening temp than necessary, if fan and shroud are aerodynamic (??. For lack of better) to each other, or if fan clutch fluid could be changed, but something's gotta be causing and it has to be addressed, before AC heat load is added.

I’m dealing with a similar issue now, when I run my A/C keeping the engine cool becomes a challenge.

The grill in a pig snout has something less than 88 in2 total air opening area and for reference my 16” electric fan has about 201 in2 area. When stacking mutable radiators in the front of a pig moving enough CFM of air through the 88 in2 grill is proving to be difficult. I’m looking at how the OEM’s do it on new cars with small grills like the Taurus at it appears they all use very large CFM fans to pull the required air through the smaller openings, my Spal fan pulls around 2200 CFM and Ford fans can be found in the 3500 to 4500 CFM range.

I’m still experimenting but at this point it’s looking like a grill mod something like the late pigs with the area around TOYOTA letters removed and some cross bar trimming or a larger CFM fan is going to be required for an A/C equipped Pig, especially if you’re running a higher HP than the stock engine.

Cool, this is turning into an awesome discussion, love it! I'm curious to see what @Delancy discovers in terms of potential 70-series compatibility.

In the meantime, I took my haggard, tired, leaky existing radiator up to a shop here in town. I should know more tomorrow regarding options for repair, re-core, etc. I'll post back with the news, be it good or bad.

My local shop was able to work mine over... granted I have not actually installed it in my pig yet soooo not too sure how it actually works... ;)
