Thanks for the pics. Adding an aussie to the rear will be my next mod. If its as easy as the Lock Rights I'll be in good shape. :)

thanx busta,

i tell you i got your wheels?

I have a Lockright in my FJ40 and I've put > 80k < 100k miles on it and that's with 35's. I expect the Aussie to have the same durability.

The cross shaft does get hammered with these lockers, don't have the pics handy or I'd post a couple.

From my understanding there were differences in cross shafts from year to year. Some not being treated properly. You can tell if it's going to last by running an edge of a file across the shaft and see if it digs in. If so then go find you a different one.

Couple of more tips. Make sure you measure the distance with a feeler gage between the caps that go over the C-Clips and the cross shaft before you install the 2 center sections of the locker. You cannot measure this after they are in. This measurement needs to be in spec or your gonna have issues.

Do not put this in the front diff on a vehicle that doesn't have power steering. Unless you are some sort of body builder. 4hrs on the trail will make you understand. Going around sharp corner sucks expect to do more than a 3 point turn.

Also when you have one in the rear expect for it to unload while driving on the street around a corner and plan on getting out scared that your axle or something just broke and fell off only to find that everything is ok. Make sure you carry spare underwear for the first time this happens.

These types of lockers are not perfect but they sure beat paying 1000k for an ARB. Aussie Locker are a great company to work with and they will help you every way they can. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

This is a cross shaft from a '77 that had been in a rear diff with a Lockright for at least 80k miles. I pulled it to fix a gasket leak. Still running the LR after replacing the cross shaft.

Thanks

Great posts guys, I like the 2-Lo and unlocked hub ideas when wheelin' with the front locker. Anyone else use these "tricks?" I have no PS and want to go with the Aussie in the front end with 33 X 10.50's.

Hey Ed,

I will be doing the Aussie (rear first) AND power steering within the next couple of months as a result of my little trip up Odessa canyon :) , I will let you know when I get ready to start wrenching.

Sounds like a great learning opportunity, thanks. I'll be there with some :grinpimp: break-fluid  .

Hopefully I'm not breaking a forum rules or hijacking a thread, but this is exactly what I'm looking for. I still have a list to do first, but I can get my wife to budget this in the future.

OK, a dumb question. How much does the Aussie cost(ballpark) for the rearend on a 73 J40? What else would I need to purchase?

Thanks, rangerFJ401973

I found the pricing on one of our threads!!

It looks great and it's now on my "to do list"
