Finally sold the LX. She shipped out to Colorado to her new home today.

I’m currently trying to figure out my gas venting issue since the interior is getting stinky. I pulled the rear panel to see if anything is leaking but need to go out and look more closely

I would pull the busted hub insert out and try to install it on the birf. Flip it and use the undamaged side of the hub insert.
If it slips on, then it was operator error and you didn't get the splines lined up properly.
If, on the other hand, it doesn't slide on, you need to check the birf splines and make sure they aren't twisted or burred. If they are just burred, a triangle file works well for cleaning them up and getting a good angle on the splines.

Good info, thanks.

I took the hub insert out, flipped it, and it wouldn’t slide on either way. A closer inspection of the splines shows that the valleys on the outer splines no longer existed or had been mushroomed up. I spent some time with the triangle file improving the shape of the valleys but the hub insert still would not slide on, I think because the peaks are not the right shape. They look too wide and flat.

I gave it some thought, and instead of trying to reshape all the splines on 40 year-old axles, this morning I ordered new Longfield Chromoly axles from Cruiser Outfitters. I’m planning on installing elockers in the future and having stronger axles with good splines will pay dividends down the road.

I like RCVs, but TG's Longfields are good too. I recommend getting the chromoly hub gears as well, since those will be the weak point and the regular gears will void the warranty if they damage the birf during a failure.

Question on brake lines while I’m waiting on the new Longfield’s......the brake line tabs welded onto the axle housing have round holes, the end of the flexible brake line is hex....looks like I’d have to shape the round hole into a hex so that the brake line clip can fit onto the flex line. Is that correct or is there another way of doing this?

Nevermind, I figured it out. I’ll just file the hex on the brake line round so it’ll fit in the hole, then the brake line clip should slide on.

No, don't file the hex, there is a clip that goes into the slot that holds the flex line in place. Check the service manual.

Yeah, the hex is so you can tighten the hard line in to the soft line without the soft line twisting.

This is a classic issue. I think the new lines hexes are too big to fit in the stock hex hole. You might try filing them out to fit the bigger fitting. Most of mine are loose , since the spacing between the c-clip and support is often too narrow to fit with the spring clip. Very frustrating

X2 but I do have a stock inner in my spare parts if you need it.

Yes, this is the issue. I need to either file the round hole to fit the hex, or file the hex to fit the round hole. I have the correct clips, but the clip won’t fit until I file one or the other. As mentioned above, if I file the round hole into a hex it’ll prevent rotation of the brake line, so I’ll go that route instead.

Thanks Fellas

That is the right answer.

I little RVT to fill the screw holes in my fuel vent regulator thing. Apparently at some point someone thought it was a good spot to anchor the rear speaker and later covered the hole with tape. Tape started to fail so the cabin was getting pretty stinky!

Finally have a truck to wheel. The shop at has made a ton of progress in the last few weeks. Mostly thanks to hand me down parts from @DominicanFZJ80

Will it be lettered:
Owner: Ryan
Driver: Crash?
I don't know if I ever enjoyed wheeling more than the day Crash joined us in his stock $500 FJ60. That was a fun day!!!!

I can't even see over the dash to see the front of the hood.
I have some 4" Grainger catalogs I will donate to your cause. it would be phone books but I haven't seen one in years.

Well if we go that route it also needs sponsored by @DominicanFZJ80. Crash is definitely the better driver. I can't even see over the dash to see the front of the hood.
That’s a low bar...
