Pretty quiet in here... what are you working on? (3 Viewers)

Just played around with it and decided to leave it off because it ends up hanging down and will get caught on stuff when backing up on a trail- looks like it would get hooked and rip the bumper off. Ill run without it for now.

I ended up taking mine off as well

You know how you start off attempting one project, which takes you down the rabbit hole into another project? Like me installing new suspension led to an entire front axle rebuild due to my front axle being bent. Just spent a good while removing a stuck dowel pin from my hub. Normal methods didn’t work, so ended up welding a nut onto the end of it, could turn it but couldn’t get enough pulling leverage to remove it. So at 3am, I got the idea heat the hub with a propane torch, place it above two cross beams on our outdoor pergola, clamp onto the dowel pin with a big set of vice grips and hang on it with my full body weight, and it finally popped loose. PITA LOL!!!

I’ve been methodically cleaning, media blasting, taping, priming, and painting all my front end parts. It’s been slow going because my 15 gal compressor can’t keep up with the continuous-use media blasting cabinet, so I have to do a little at a time and let it rest.

I went ahead and restored the brake disc shields even though I’m not going to re-use them. I’ll sell them on Mud or eBay or save them in my parts collection.

Soon I’ll be ready for the fun part, reassembly.

Why not reuse them?

I got these backing plate eliminators because I thought they’d make for a cleaner install and lessen the chance of stones/debris getting caught up in there. Think I should stay all stock?

Supposedly the backing plates are there so that you get even cooling on both sides of the rotor. Without them the inside of the rotor gets more air flow than the side with the wheel. No idea if it really matters though. You also loose the brake junction with the eliminators.

Thanks for the info. What’s the point of the brake junction on the back of the backing plates? Seems over engineered, but I’m no expert. Toyota must have built them that way for a reason.

Ok, maybe I’ll keep her all stock with the newly restored backing plates then. Once I finish cleaning up the diff and the calipers then I’ll start reassembly, probably tomorrow.

My guess is to keep the rubber hose above the axle away from things that would snag it.

My vote is to keep them. If there is nothing wrong with them keep them.

Curious what you all use for floor jacks. I have the husky 3 ton from Home Depot and it was maxing our height wise when I did my wheels and oil. Would like to have something that’ll go higher and not give me foreboding of giving out

I need to buy a new jack too, mine definitely isn't tall enough. The only thing I have that's tall enough is the HiLift, but I don't have room to use it properly.

Are you using a good size block of wood on the floor jack cradle (e.g. 4x4X6 :smokin:). That's what I have been doing...

I’ve thought about that but that does worry me a bit. Jack stands are 6 ton torins so that’s not an issue thankfully.

Where are you lifting from?
