So would a drum housing work with my 79+ parts? And if so, how much would shipping be to NM? Cost isn’t a factor unless it’s a crazy price.

The housing is the same - but I would think there has to be someone closer with a housing. Check out the parting out section. Fastenal isn't shipping freight right now (cheapest) so it could go fedex or ups, but I'm betting that it would be $100-$200 for shipping (wild ass guess)

There's one in San Diego on eBay for $200

@bkfj40 that's a sweet price for yours 👍

I’ll check it out, thanks. There’s also one in Texas and LC graveyard in Colorado. Looks like a road trip is in my future. The off-road shop, Arizona Differential, in Phoenix also said they could fix it.

I'm contemplating getting the pumpkin out of BK's axle and I don't know enough about year changes in FJ40s. Jack's 40 is a 1978, so front discs. BK's front axle has drum brakes, so from what I can tell the gear ration of 4.11 should be the same. But also as I read it, Jack's pinion should be fine spline and BK's would be coarse. Is this correct?

that is correct. is it going to be wheeled? if not course will be fine.

It is not going to be wheeled hard anytime soon, but if they have different spline patterns then they won't mate, correct?
The spline count refers to the flange and pinion mating, not the axle shafts.

You may have to swap flanges though, to match the drive shaft. @cruiseroutfit I think had a nice year-by-year graphic of the different pinion flanges but I can't seem to find it now. When I swapped in the 3.73 3rds I got from Gary (from a 60 series) I had Cruiser Outfitters send me new matching flanges, pinion nuts, and pinion seals.

BK’s will be small flange. Do they make a blank flange for course spline diffs?
Why are you considering the swap?

You can redrill the flange for the proper holes, as long as it is a round flange.
But are the flanges for corse spline? (I have not looked at them.) I know they fit fine spline.
BK’s diff will be course and his dads is fine. I also have corse spline drive shaft you can swap out the drive shaft. But that seams like a lot of work.

The flange diagram is on cruiser outfitters page.

Took me a bit to find where it was.

Probably cheaper to source a replacement than to pay to have an axle straightened. I tried to straighten my rear one and it never took., but YMMV.

I just scored an axle housing from Classic Cruiser in Colorado for $300 with a 90 day warranty. They have a cruiser graveyard and sell a lot of parts. It’s being shipped to my house in NM.

This gives me a good excuse to buy that new DeWalt portable band saw I’ve been eying to cut my old axle and remove the shaft.

It's on the old site here:

Y'all beat me to it :D

That means @bkfj40 3rd will mate right up to Jack's driveshaft, assuming of course, that everything is original '78 stuff. @Von Hayek

The spline pattern definitely will--his manufacture date is 2/78. So if the bolt pattern is different on the flanges, which is conceivable because BK doesn't know that date of manufacture, then all I would have to do is swap the flange from Jack's truck on to the new pinion shaft--correct?

Hey @cruiseroutfit, thanks for having this up for everyone.

Happy to help. We have all of the different pinion flange variations available too!
