Power Steering Gear Box 105 Series Sector Shaft/Pitman Arm Upgrade

You'll be fine with a regular 80 box. No need for the 105 sector shaft with essentially stockish size tires. Did you ever have problems with the 60 box and your tire size? If the answer is no then upgrading to an 80 box with 105 shaft is overkill. I'm running a stock 80 box on my FJ60 with 255/85/16s and this setup is just fine.

Having enjoyed near 1000 miles w/ my new OEM steering gear box (44110-60212) + 105 pitman arm (45411-60360), I can say unequivocally it's one of my fav upgrades.

From go you can feel the tightness that was lost in the span of 24 years as is the case with my 80. I'm glad I picked one up while it's still available. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

I'm on the fence between a new factory steering box which I read includes the 105 sector shaft or sending my current steering box in and including the sector shaft to upgrade.

Do you know did your new steering box come with the 105 shaft in it?

It's been confirmed a few times that new OEM boxes come w/ the 105 shaft which means you need the pitman arm to go with it.

An option is to rebuild with a new input assembly and (105 series) sector shaft + pitman arm, which gives you all new wear parts.

Why not have Redhead do a custom rebuild with whatever you want for half the price as new OEM? And that would include porting and tapping for hydro assist. I spent just under a grand on their rebuild, porting and the 105 shaft set up from PartsOuq.

I'm just weighing options at the moment. I did hear feedback from a local 80 owner who said that the rebuilt units from the usual outfits have some leakage issues but this is only third or fourth hand Intel, not sure how reliable it is.

As long as the wear items inside the steering box are replaced, I don't have an issue with rebuilt units. I don't really have a strong need for sector shaft/pitman arm upgrade, given that the cost is around $700 alone for the parts. My sector shaft is not twisted.

People who are doing DIY rebuilds, are they replacing any of the wear items internally? Replacing the seals surely can't be enough to reduce the play in the system.

There's also an outfit out of Texas who has been rebuilding our boxes for a long time, and I am curious if they replace any of the internal wear items.

I had west Texas off road rebuild my steering box & tap it for hydro. The box is nice and tight and has not had any leakage.
That being said I'm not sure what was replaced. I sure a quick call to RH and or WTOR would answer your question ! ;)

Most of the play comes from lack of preload in the input section bearings. That can and should be adjusted during rebuild, although from what I've seen many DIY'ers don't know how to do that. Wear on parts is typically minimal, but if they do get worn, those parts are the sector shaft and input assembly which together cost nearly $1k from Toyota. Funny thing is that the gear-mesh mating surfaces between the sector shaft and the power piston (included in the input section) usually only get worn if a person overtightens the 'adjustment nut' on the outside of the box in a misguided attempt to reduce the play in the box. That adjustment nut cannot be set properly with the box in the truck, but nobody wants to hear that.

Very good info, thanks Spike. I have the OEM seal kit for a rebuild and thinking about doing this myself, as if I don't have enough crap on the plate already.

Get a beam-type torque wrench rated for inch-pounds and search for instructions and specs for setting the input section bearing preload here on the board- it's not addressed in the 80 series FSM, but it's similar to the 60 series box. I know I've posted about it, and @Tools R Us may have as well; he showed it to me. There's another tool that is helpful, a description can be found in my posts on the subject. It's not difficult at all, and the results are very rewarding.

I should clarify- I never did a proper 'write-up', I just posted on other threads, so don't look for a thread from me about it. I'll edit my earlier post to that effect.

What all do you replace inside the box besides just the o rings?
>Ball bearings wear down, they have larger ball bearings (30 diff sizes). May need to re-assemble box multiple times to get it "right".
>They test the Power pistons for gpm/psi on bench. If bad, new one will be going in.

The steering gear box will go through severely inspections while it gets rebuilt. We replace all seal and bearing.

Do you have a rebuilt unit that I can buy and send you mine as a core return?

Currently turn time is 2-2.5wks out once we receive the steering gear box and get the proper info need to start the process.

I grabbed a 105 pitman arm, nut, washer a while back in anticipation of the preventative maintenance job.

Just gotta decide redhead rebuild with 105 sector or new :hillbilly:

I talked to the redhead a while back they test all the wear components for specification and tolerance if certain items need replacement they will contact for an additional fee and replace.

So I know most who have had the redhead job done from what I hear are satisfied and happy. When I ran the numbers and added up having them replace all the where items regardless of tolerance I was quickly approaching the price of a brand new unit.

I'm planning this job when I build my new 1fz. I just got a call from my guy at Mr T my short block has arrived. My plan and scope for this jobs going to be building the new motor and while I'm doing the motor send out the
*steering box (or new)
*Ps pump rebuild
*Steering wheel
*Tcase with sumo 3.1.1 reduction

And anything else I can think of.
 
Anyone switch over to Mobil DTE 24 after upgrading the steering box or are you still running atf?

I noted previously that Redhat replaces the balls with larger balls, which I found to be rather interesting. $1200 rebuilt vs $1850 brand new is a large gap. Still need new pitman arms
