Power Steering Gear Box 105 Series Sector Shaft/Pitman Arm Upgrade

Correct me if I'm wrong but the concept of rebuild is basically replacing all the seals, right? During this process nothing else is being replaced in terms of hard parts. So how does this process make the steering box a little tighter?
There are rebuilds, and then there are REBUILDS...

Typically the preload on both the input section and the sector shaft adjustment screw are loose after years of use. Rebuilding the box assumes you are correcting those, rather than just resealing. I cringe when I see write-ups that suggest you just mark where various things are, such as adjusting screws and nuts, and return them to those places- those people are not gaining much from their labors, other than new seals. Would you do that for your wheel bearings? Same principle.

I agree 100% and the power piston should be in the mix but I don't know if Redhead does the PP on their own. I believe the FSM shows you how to set the preload and the few gents who have done pictomentary on this topic have also done so.

I'm getting ready to tackle a leaking steering box on my truck and I have a few questions. i've read through the thread and I see where others are suggesting to upgrade to the 105 shaft and pitman arm. I don't wheel my truck and it is my daily. Is this a necessary upgrade? I see the cost is $770, so I was hoping to avoid the additional cost. My LC is a '97 with 283k on the clock. What do others think?

It's an extra measure, not required.

So, just to clarify--if you order a new steering box, they send you the 105 box with 105 internals? And is the Pitman a separate purchase? Thanks!

I understand that a new OEM steering box comes with the 105 internals. I also understand you need to order the 105 pitman to match.

What other factory bits and bobs does one need to do a complete steering box refresh?

Great thread, nice to know redhead is a solid choice or a factory new with the 105 upgraded sector is available also.

I see 44110-60211 and 44110-60212 are available with the 60212 showing as the replacement for the 60210 and 60211.

If I guy had access to a 60211 at a good price does anyone know if it includes the 105 goodies?

FWIW I just had RedHead do my 19th gearbox
Sounds like they aren't doing a great job if this is the 19th time they're working on it

Thanks, I talked to Richard at redhead, sounds like a quality outfit and knowing you have used them repeatedly with success is comforting.

Now to put a plan together and include Mobil DTE 24, all new hoses and pump rebuild or factory replace.

Might finally send that steering wheel out also.

Just received the seal of

Just had mine done (no exchange) at 225K. Been using DTE24 for the last 100K+ and received the seal of approval to continue using DTE24 from RerdHead after the rebuild and inspection.

Awesome! Thanks Phil!

Steering wheel/steering box job here we come!

It seems you aren’t doing a great job understanding basic written grammar.
Maybe not but I'm willing to take that risk

Happy to have come across this thread, lots of good background info,

The SGB on the my '87 FJ60 is leaking and I'm considering going down the path to upgrade to the 80 box, possibly with the 105 sector shaft and pittman arm.

However, I am unsure if that will work with the rest of the 60 setup. It looks like the 60 pittman arm has more drop.

Has anyone done this, without having to modify the larger pittman arm? Or, should I just be happy w a stock 80 setup. I don't expect to have tires bigger than 32s...

While the 105 sector shaft in a nice upgrade, I don’t think it necessary if you only going to run 32” tires. JMHO
I’m rock crawling with 39s and a stock box with hydro assist.

Having enjoyed near 1000 miles w/ my new OEM steering gear box (44110-60212) + 105 pitman arm (45411-60360), I can say unequivocally it's one of my fav upgrades.

From go you can feel the tightness that was lost in the span of 24 years as is the case with my 80. I'm glad I picked one up while it's still available. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Gl!

You'll be fine with a regular 80 box. No need for the 105 sector shaft with essentially stockish size tires. Did you ever have problems with the 60 box and your tire size? If the answer is no then upgrading to an 80 box with 105 shaft is overkill. I'm running a stock 80 box on my FJ60 with 255/85/16s and this setup is just fine.
