Power Steering Gear Box 105 Series Sector Shaft/Pitman Arm Upgrade

I noted previously that Redhat replaces the balls with larger balls, which I found to be rather interesting. $1200 rebuilt vs $1850 brand new is a large gap. Still need new pitman arms
Nice breakdown on cost. Good to see fresh pricing. Thanks!

It is a large gap isn't it........ I'm tempted to stick with the Red Head Steering Gears rebuild and be specific about replacing wear parts.

I have a friend with a spare 105 sector shaft at a very fair price new inbox. I might grab that in anticipation of getting mine rebuilt.

Of course, I'm not hot on replacing the pitman+sector if not needed. If my splines aren't twisted and I'm certainly not a rock crawler (it happens on occasion), I don't see the need for this huge upgrade.

I picked up a used box and have a 105 kit with pitman arm that I'm planing to send out for a rebuild. Then I well put my stock rebuilt box on the shelf as spare ;)
I well also keep the stock pitman arm and sector shaft that are on the used box as spares, I like to hoard parts 😝

I'm just weighing options at the moment. I did hear feedback from a local 80 owner who said that the rebuilt units from the usual outfits have some leakage issues but this is only third or fourth hand Intel, not sure how reliable it is.

As long as the wear items inside the steering box are replaced, I don't have an issue with rebuilt units. I don't really have a strong need for sector shaft/pitman arm upgrade, given that the cost is around $700 alone for the parts. My sector shaft is not twisted.

People who are doing DIY rebuilds, are they replacing any of the wear items internally? Replacing the seals surely can't be enough to reduce the play in the system.

There's also an outfit out of Texas who has been rebuilding our boxes for a long time, and I am curious if they replace any of the internal wear items.
Some shops do numerous things. The only thing Redhead does is steering gears and for many applications. Mine is going on two years and zero leaks. I bought a seal kit from PartsOuq and then Redhead told me they use only proprietary seals. The pitman arm and sector shaft from partsOuq was under $300 parts only. These $700 prices we see have me baffled.

Red head installs correctly sized recirculating balls which help to decrease that sloppy feel.

If you don’t want hydro assist ports drilled then a new Toyota box is certainly a solid decision.

I got off the phone with Redhat and here are my notes:

Spoke to Derrick at RedHat

What all do you replace inside the box besides just the o rings?
>Ball bearings wear down, they have larger ball bearings (30 diff sizes). May need to re-assemble box multiple times to get it "right".
>They test the Power pistons for gpm/psi on bench. If bad, new one will be going in.
>They turn the sector shaft and polish them, then mic them. Add material using a flame spray if below tolerance.

Do you have a rebuilt unit that I can buy and send you mine as a core return?
> $556+$450core+$76 round trip shipping to my zip. Has in stock.

>105 sector shaft upgrade kits.
>$1226 rebuilt gear with new ball bearings, 105 shaft.
>Warranty 12mos/unlimited miles
It would be ideal if redhead would just install the 105 sector when rebuilding an 80 box, so they don’t have to tear them apart again when we send a 105 shaft into them (if buying in stock units from them)! They must sell more of the boxes with the 80 sector. Am I reading that right, that they are standard 80 boxes they have in stock, not loaded with the 105 sectors?

So your saying the price of the sector shaft and Pitman arm have more then doubled ?

I updated post #277 with feedback from West Tx offroad. FYI.

My post wasn't clear but Redhead carries the 105 sector shaft kit in house and have units rebuilt on the shelf with this mod for $1200.

I'm not sure what the prices were when this thread was started back in 2009, but these are the prices from PartsOuq as of today, 2/28/23.

In comparison, cruiseryard offers the same type of rebuild and includes the pitman arm for $1099. Has anyone used these? 80 Series, Rebuilt Steering Gearbox with 105-Series Sector Shaft and Pitman Arm - https://www.cruiseryard.com/80-series-rebuilt-steering-gearbox-with-105-series-sector-shaft-and-pitman-arm-with-warranty-like-new/

The price for upgrade parts kit has been about $700 from certain suppliers since the first I heard of it 6 or 7 years ago. I was shocked at how much lower PartsOuq was even with the shipping fee from the UAE.

Great input Jason, thanks for that. Looks like they don't do the compensation for the wear inside the boxes, from what I can see. I wasn't aware of the needle roller bearings, where do they live?

copy/paste
  • washing it thoroughly
  • inspecting all component
  • replacement of needle roller bearings
  • resealing with a heavy duty kit
  • fresh coat of paint
You will receive the following:

  • Installed brand new Toyota 105 Series Sector shaft and internal bits. This is stronger than the original sector shaft and is a must for those trucks running larger tires.
  • Brand new OEM 105-Series Pitman arm, washer and nut. Your US Spec one is too small and cannot be used.

That sexiness prolly cost as much as my 80 😁

You kinda nailed it. It's a value based decision.

Ok, the given is it's $2K new from T and won't be an option for long.

How much is $2K in relation to the overall value/condition of your 80? For my mint factory locked '97 with a new engine, new suspension bits everywhere, new exhaust system headers to tip, etc, it was a no brainer to go with a new box. Bottom line, there's no wrong decision here. I know I made the best decision for me.

All pleasure. Gl!

You have excellent points, no arguments from me what so ever. My wallet, on the other hand, is screaming bloody murder. :bang:

Where did you buy yours from?

It's def one of the most expensive parts for our 80. Heck, cost wise, it's the 2nd highest on my refresh parts list (short block #1; head #3). But I appreciate it every time I move the steering wheel. But if your bushings are original, your tie rod boot torn, your caster sht post-lift, your steering shock overlooked, panhard angle out of whack... there's systemic attn required.

I got it from partsouq iirc.

It looks like there’s some under the top cap where the preload is set as well as what the sector spins around based on this rebuild thread: Steering gear box rebuild - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/steering-gear-box-rebuild.443494/

Edit: further down in that same thread it looks like there’s another one behind the power piston. Wonder which one/s get replaced? I will inquire and report back!

Update time - here’s the question I asked:
It lists needle bearings are replaced on your site. From my understanding, there are a couple that the sector spins around (one at preload cap and one further down shaft), as well as another behind the power piston. Which one/s get replaced?
Here’s the response I received:
“The wear parts listed are the ones that are checked/updated”.

I interpret this as all needle bearings are replaced if worn. So the only thing left on the table would be the ball bearings, which I can’t imagine receive all that much wear, but I’m not qualified in this area. What else can wear other than the bearings, seals and sector shaft? All that remains would be the worm gear and piston, correct?

Amayama is ~$90 cheaper than this right now out of Japan. I just ordered.

Edit: that’s without undisclosed import duties and taxes. Unordered and ordered through PartSouq.
