Powdercoat wheels

I bought 5, blasted them and had them coated in a bright metallic silver. They came out pretty nice. A few little pits show if you look close but it's fine for me. I think having them all one color looks a little tougher than the machined face on the stock ones too. Less fancy, I guess.

That looks really good. I've always wanted to do mine in a dark/gunmetal grey, how much did the whole job cost you?

Mine were in similar condition to IronCladLou's and came out like this.
Now 5 years later are covered in rock rash but are otherwise holding up great.

@Corbet ---

Now those look SHARP!

Mind caring the color tile / powdercoat recipe for that?

I'm a holdout & just like the classic 5 spoke, and 16"ers are still give me enough sidewall. Those are the nicest looking refurb on factory wheels IMO.

It was many years back so I don't recal the color codes. I dropped them off and kind of gave my powder the freedom to impress me. The cut outs are a black textured color and the machined surface is a metallic grey. Obviously the raised "Toyota" is red.

Wow - how are you getting them done for only $60/wheel?
I called around and was quoted $100/ wheel for steelies that are in great shape to start with!

Shop in FL charged me 340 for 5 wheels.

I assume $60/wheel does not include removing/remounting the tire and balancing. Perhaps that's the difference?

Not in my case. I was offering to bring them just the wheels with no tires, wheel weights or valve stems. I guess I must have called the Nordstroms of powdercoating!

Had mine refurbished this year two tone turned out great after many years.

Do you remember what color you powder coated these? They look great.

$60-ish per wheel is a common and reasonable price for blasting and powdercoating a set of wheels. If someone is charging more, look elsewhere.

This was a very spot-on price then, but the ‘Rona blew my PC prices by ~2-300%.

If you can DIY, a used oven would pay for itself now in the present market / backlog / prices.

Sad truth

Are the original stock wheels powder coated? If so is it just a clear coat?

Geez, I was just quoted $750 to refinish all 5 of my 40th Anniversary wheels. Now that's sounding awfully high based on what others are paying.

Not really - $100/ea would be a bargain in the weirdness of the C19 economy.

My quote to PC a headache rack was near double what I paid 3yrs ago, same shop.
What was $150 pre-tax was $285 pre-tax when I called a few mo back.

And look at the date last post of $60/ea - 2016

Plus, to do them to exact finish of OE, it’ll either be soda or walnut shell/corncob media - any sand will leave a matte silver to the milled AL area, so esp if it’s a shop that is reputable that could be about as good a quote as you find, IDK.

Not sure how covid is responsible for pushing the prices up but I was quoted $100 per wheel. Media blasting was extra. It's amazing how good my paint job came out.

I asked on the price & the owner couldn’t keep employees - lots quit & took ‘Rona checks.

So he was running ragged just to cover overhead as a solo act, so if you weren’t a regular w/ constant parts, he priced so it was worth doing.

Ran into the same thing when I had a nitride finish done - shoptime was valuable, it was not the price I expected when last I’d talked to them. :meh:

At least they had supplies, unlike trying to buy anything home office went ~yr ago.
I was wait-listed for HP printer cartridges, super common ones near all home HP laser use.

mine came out almost exactly as yours, in the shade they are kind of flat, but they are silver in the sunlight.....my powdercoat guy used prismatic Porsche silver and a uv rated clear, profile is when I had just picked them up from the powder guy and had the 315 MTR's mounted and running around in the middle of February snow

I love Porsche Silver. I ordered a lot of swatches from Prismatic and it boiled down to either BMW Silver or Porsche Silver. I chose Porsche for two sets of wheels for my Lexus.
