Hi All Four,
My 40 is a 1981 STOCK standard, NO PS, drums all round, ratio
at 4.11, SUA with 4" shackles, B 3L engine and on 31.5x10xR15.

Cruises between (90-100)km/hr or (55-62)miles/hr.
Touches speeds between (105-115)km/hr or (65-70)miles/hr.
......... comfortably...
Have NOT gone beyond 115km/hr.

regards,
HelimanBD.

why do you have drums I thought 81 had disks in the front and 3.73

Perhaps this has something to do with it:

" Location: Seremban, NS, Malaysia "

42" swampers, 4.88 gears....I have pulled 3500+RPMS on the freeway...

You do the math...

Chajazz,
Poser is right. The vehicle is registered and brought into Malaysia
in 1981. It is probably 1980 or earlier. I have two other friends
who have their 1981/1980 on drums too...

regards,
HelimanBD.

Hell....figured I'd chime in also....74 f with 30x9.50s (for now) and I run comfortably at 60mph (as indicated on the speedo, weren't the original tires 28's?). She's still got a lot more to give, but she's screaming pretty good and I've got no one to impress with my top speed.;p Luckily, most people think the truck is so cool that they don't get mad at me on the highway....plus I'm in LA, so you never really go that fast on the highway anyway.

On a cool side note: Tom Hanks has a green 70 fj40....that's pretty cool! He saw it on the side of the road for sale, loved it, and bought it. Thought that was awesome.

i ran a 501 caddy and a turbo 400 auto back in 75 or so because the fords and chevys were kicking my ass. with the 501 none of em beat me after that ,truck ran well over a hundred easy with 36 hawgs.looking back it was probably not to smart but it was fun .my current dds both cruise about 65 no problems .with all the idiot drivers around here i prefer to keep it safe good luck

Can cruise at 70 - 75 on I-95 easily (it's flat down here) and pull into the car pool lane and pass at 85 or so, mayber more. That's was on my 37" MTR street tyres, rebuilt 2F with FI and DUI, SM420 to 2.31 to 4.10's. Sold the 37's, and have a used set of 40" MTR's that I'm going to use for street driving soon as I can't run the Krawlers on the street. Expect it to be a bit faster with 40's.

All that being said, it's solid, stable and no wandering - but dang, I'd hate to see what would happen if something bad ever happened at that speed (e.g. won't be much left).

56 mph

Top cruise speed touched 65 a few times

Stock 83 with 4 speed. The max comfortable cruising speed is 65 mph and could run it all day. I've come close to 80 but it feels too unstable to be safe.

65 is comfortable, now that I have xover steering which doesn't have any worn TREs. Max I was able to ever push it, when I still had 33s, was about 75MPH (+- 1-2 mph). I did get to 80MPH once but the engine started to cut out at that point (too much throttle and not enough flow of fuel).

I don't push more than 65 usually, 3000 rpm 3rd gear, is pretty rapped out.

65 is about my upper limit. It would go faster, but I wouldn't. If you think you are at all safe above 65 or 70 in a tall, narrow, short wheel base vehicle, you are kidding yourself.

That about sums up my 40 with a three speed.

Top speed? I really don't know... I have run 80-85 mph on I65 on 31's. On 55 mph highways, I have been known to pass those running the speed limit.

Warp 9........................but i can't hold it;)

All stock, 4sp, 3.7 GR, 265/75/16 more like 31.7"
Toy mini power steeering.
The cruising speed I am most comfertable with 80-90 km.
I can also do 100 Km easy enough with more caution ,but don'tlike it .
I am older now , I enjoy the slow life and I feel more wiser when I see other younger falks speeding and rushing and paying for it in more ways than one.
At one time in my life I was that speeding fool, I sure have paid the price.

65-75 mph feels reasonably comfortable, white knuckles developing over 75-80, and occasionally having been at 87 while passing someone, I am sure it can do more than 90 - I have never tried to max it out

but it's a "cruiser"; if I wanted to "race" I would take my little  car

No speedo that works well so I'd guess it cruises at 55 to 70 easy and I have never had the balls to open it up all the way and let it run.

I take that back, did go WOT , 4 gear at SnT on the dunes and that was some fun s***. Left me wanting more ponies.

'78 FJ40 with original 2F engine, DUI, 4.10, 33x10.50. It will cruise at 75mph all day (speed based on GPS as the speedometer is way off the faster you go with larger tires). I've had it up to 87mph according to my GPS.

about 60-65 before the secondary kicks... haven't had the guts to see how fast it will go with it WOT but had it up to 75-80, still pulling.
