Hi all. I have been working for several days now to track down an electrical issue in the ignition system of a friend's '65 FJ40 / F135 motor. See link: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=145317

I finally was able to fix the electrical issue, but now I need to make sure I am setting the timing correctly. Normally I would not create a second post just for this question, but time is of the essence.

I located the 7* BTDC line on the flywheel, and lined up the timing mark accordingly (see picture below- do I have it correct?). Slipped the distributor back in place, and made sure it is seated properly. Rotated the distributor so the points are just about to open. Verified that the rotor is facing the #1 contact on the cap. Put the cap back on and reattached the vacuum line. Aside from fine tuning the timing with a light, is that all I need to do? Big thanks in advance for your help.

You should be good to go, I just got done doing mine about a week ago.
Nothing to big.....until....all the minor problems add up to one big problem but considering that's not the case your rig should be good to go....
Fire it up!!!!

Thanks for the reply. I was able to fire it up without any major issues. Advanced the timing just a bit to make the engine purr like a Singer sewing machine, and I think she is happy. I'm glad I can put this problem to bed! Cheers!

If you didn't verify that the engine was at TDC for #1 (and not #6) you got lucky, but it is a 50:50 chance.

I thought the BB was 7 degrees and the line was TDC?

it is but I think it can be there for the compression stroke and the intake stroke :D
At least that is what i think he may have meant.

I just when through timing stuff today, learned a lot.

I should make a comprehensive timing for f135 photo tutorial :D

what i learned to day was to hook up the dwell rpm meter.

You want to set you timing at exactly 650 rpms.

so adjust your throttle adjustment screw on the carb until you reach a steady 640 rpms.

pinch the vacuum line at the carb and remove the vacuum line at the vacuum advance on your distributor.

Then i shot the timing light, and adjusted the timing to a few degrees advance of the stock 7 degrees before top dead center ( basically center the ball between the needle and the bottom part of the timing window ) once that is set look at your rpms, adjust the throttle idle if the rpms are not on exactly 650 rpms. check your timing again, get it sorted until it is both perfect timing and 650 rpms.

Then you can hook up you vacuum advance vacuum line again and shouldbe good from there.

You may also want to do a "lean drop" afterwards, I do not know how to do that yet but once i do I will post it up/

of course all this should come after you gap your points and get your dwell sorted, but you get the picture :D

I will try to do a nice photo write up sometime once i get more time away form work ( and sort out some last bits on my cruiser )
