I also got to painting a lot of things. I painted the thermostat, water pump housing, lifter covers, oil cooler bolts, heater tubes, and the timing cover bolts! (Don’t have pictures for some)

Next, I installed the oil cooler cover! Before we installed the oil cooler cover I removed the fins and replaced the gaskets between it and the oil cooler housing along with the O-rings in the middle of those gaskets. That gasket and O-ring are two of the main points where oil and water can start mixing and that is no good. I made sure to really remove all gasket material from the surface and I also put quite a bit of Engine RTV just in case. I fingered tightened those bolts at first because it would be easier to torque down once the actual cooler was on the engine. Next we installed the actual cover! I took the oil cooler cover gasket and covered it in RTV as well. I used the FSM to make sure where the different length bolts went along the cover and then tightened the bolts to 13 ft-lbs. Lastly, I tightened the cooler bolts down to 18 ft-lbs.

Niiice! I bought one a few months ago but haven't had an opportunity to try it out yet. Hoping you will get to use it quickly and post some video.

Hope to get at this over the weekend. Will try and get some videos.

Oh wise ones,

By design the Elf Barn is internet free.

As itching as we are, lockdown has us tethered to electron highways for both parents jobs and online school.

We are contemplating getting temporary internet in the country where Elf Barn is. Nothing moves fast in the country. Let alone during this time.

While in the City, elves are working on the disc brake conversion on Mom’s FJ40 aka Sandy. They are also bonding and cruising in the Pony.

We are in the barn this weekend and will report some progress.

Thanks for the nudge and inspiration.

I hear you, my house is in a "dead zone" I have only cellular hot spot for internet and thats like 2-3 bars at most. That and super expensive satellite is all I can get here. I'm 9 miles outside of town, you'd think I'm in the great unknown...I mean its 2020.

Let me tell you how 3 kids trying to do online school works on 2-3 bars of Verizon works. :D Mr poor senior has had it, she said this was the only year she was looking forward too. Graduation on May 9th is somehow happening, remotely or in vehicle...not sure yet.

Get those diesels smoking boys!

So we got a fair bit done in the barn on Old Landy that @Cowboy45 will post.

I also got to try the sandblaster. I had a 3100psi power washer. Got Lowe’s Home Depot play sand. Could not find Cemex #30 play sand that @whitey45 used. Tried it on a old painted panel of a Mustang we had in the barn. Panel had yellow paint and epoxy primer.

When sand came through it cleaned area nicely. Felt the suction from my power washer was not strong enough to keep a steady sand flow. I am going to try it with a HD rented higher PSI power washer. Also need to keep looking for #30 sand.

Before (area highlighted in yellow)

After (same areaI am pointing to) gets to bare metal.

Hey that looks good. I think what you should try is some crushed glass 40/70. It cuts better than sand and is what the Pros use when wet blasting. From whatb I have read it is very important to keep the blast medium dry - very dry. As part of my prep I got an old 25l paint bucket and made a nice small hole in the lid for the suction pipes. Of course never got to try that yet.

Thanks for sharing the crushed glass tip. Need to look for that.

Very important the sand is dry, I pour it into a 5 gallon bucket and stick the pickup tube all the way down.( making sure the bucket is far away and covered from the overspray )My presure washer is 3200 psi. I would get pretty much continuous flow for the most part. That panel would take a couple minutes ? When I used my 2200psi it would work, but took forever. Make sure your presure washer is working properly ( and it should be gas driven) My wand is tiring to hold onto from the power it makes. I too am going to try some different media and experiment as I have some more blasting to do.

My reason for buying the gadget was to try to use a pressure washer as the "motive power" for a wet blasting cabinet to do small parts. Using the pressure washer - largest Karcher electric model - because I have it, but also because it is much quieter than a great big compressor. I'm thinking that doing small stuff like engine parts one might even get away with a much smaller cleaner - using a small blast nozzle etc. Then of course it could become a lot cheaper to put together a wet blasting cabinet than it is at present. If I were not stuck in Portland that is what I would be playing with now.
