So, I want to replace my u joints on my 1981 40 series. I’ve read sh^t loads of threads here and been through the “google”.
Mr.Toyota doesn’t sell u joints any more but every LandCruiser vendor does Sell some after market brand. Some vendors display 2 different joints at two different prices? For my peace of mind I’ve eliminated Moog, Spicer and Napa.
Do I just phone Kurt and order up the Matsuba And call it a day?

What about these from Toyotapartsdeal?

Talk to me!

thanks

That’s terrible news. The only aftermarket I ever used was total garbage that didn’t fit right from day one.

Here’s a thread I came across on the topic:

Our Matsuba joints are fantastic quality, made in Japan and very vetted in thousands of installs. OEM joints are still available and we definitely stock those too, but the Matsuba joints are top shelf. Customers run them in daily drivers, King of the Hammer competitors, global travelers, etc. Zero issues.

Early thru 1/1974:

1/1974 & later:

I’ll be watching to see where this goes. My first choice would be to support one of the reputable vendors here… but sometimes shipping to North of the 49th is unbelievable.

Technically I’m south of the 49th… but often free shipping turns into $25-50 to ship a small part. I’m good with paying the actual cost but when I’m charged $25 shipping and the stamp was $5, I get annoyed. I haven’t had this from any mud vendors I’ve ordered from (only a couple so far) but the experience has left a bad taste in my mouth.

I did consider ordering an aluminum hood spear years ago… and when I saw the price quote for shipping doubled the cost, I made my own from a scrap of aluminum a friend gave me. In the end I’m much happier with the result.

Thanks for the great info Kurt. As always you are an asset to the community.

Use ExpressAirInternational at Victoria airport. Ship to Blaine. They bring it over for 75 cents per pound. You walk the paperwork to the
terminal and pay customs and walk back and take your stuff home. Over 90% of US shippers ship free when it's over a certain amount,
but I can tell you shipping within US is pennies on the dollar compared to Canada -land of money grabbers/overchargers-
Aside from exchange ( fact of life ) you have a serious advantage living in Victoria.

I’ll keep them in mind. It sucks when shipping to Friday Harbour is $14 for two Ujoints and $58 usd to our rock a few Kms away. It’s certainly a cash grab though.

Time to get a boat… ;)

Well @cruiserdan, Yes Toyota sells u joints. I’ve plugged in that part# before and it comes up for an early 90’s 80 series. Will it cross over to a 1981 40 Series?

And Kurt, @cruiseroutfit , last year I bought your Matsuba joints for my 80. They fit so poorly I had to remove them and install OEM. Your shop told me I installed the wrong joint? This week your shop informed me you don’t carry OEM joints? ( I’m not picking a fight!)
There is a ton of good press on the Matsuba and I don’t have a problem leaning that way. Just reviewing options.

thanks

Hmmm, thats super odd to hear. Sold/installed thousands including on 80 Series, fit great, balance fine, finish races. Dunno what else to say. Sorry, you experienced an issue.

When did you email on the OEM joints? I’d like to review who replied and bring them up to speed. We stock over 7500 part numbers, always an effort to keep everyone (myself included) up to speed on all the options. Could be that we are or were temporarily out of stock, I’d like to review the email to verify. Email again ( info@cruiseroutfitters.com ) and I’ll get one of our senior tech guys to reply with info on the OEM joint offerings.

04371-36021 is the original number. It has been superseded to 04371-60210. Sometimes the substitution chain gets convoluted and it looks like a part is gone when it's really not.

No worries Kurt. I don’t email I usually call and talk to one of your guys. I’ll call back later. I do want to hear what Cruiserdan has to say about the fit of the u joint part # he posted.

About the 80 joints, the caps fit, clipped in perfectly, but there was play of millimeters side to side between the caps?

Okay then cruiserdan, guess I found a set of Toyota u-joints I can install fore and aft in a 1981 40 series without issue, thanks!

Full disclosure, if you don’t have or know the part number you are inquiring about, we have always asked customers to email or use the contact us form on CruiserTeq.com. Our guys tasked with jamming on emails are some of our most experience crew and have far more catalog & parts resources (and bandwidth) than the guys on the order phones who are order taking ninjas. The email team has access to backorder calendars, incoming parts metrics, paper and digital parts catalogs, more cross-reference info, etc. We stock 100+ of each Matsuba joint, we stock 5-10 of some of the low volume seller OEM. It may have been a case where they were out of stock and thus not showing up as an option in the retail system the phone guys use. In an ideal world we could double our phone sales staff and cross-train them all to do phone sales and customer/tech support via email/CruiserTeq. However due to phone sales volume, walk-in customers and complexity of some tech & inquires. Keeping phone/walk-in sales in the front office and tech & customer service in the upstairs crew is far more efficient for the customer and us. :D

It takes decades of dedication to learn the ropes. Even then it's not perfect.

There is more Land Cruiser product knowledge in Kurt's building than there is in the top 50 Toyota dealers combined.

Just installed the Matsuba 5min ago from @cruiseroutfit . Incredibly easy install. Smooth and tight. Edit: sledge was for getting the old joint out. :hillbilly:

I think you may have just shorted yourself by excluding Moog and Spicer as they are some of the most respected names with regard to suspension and drivetrain items.

Was pleasantly surprised when i ordered joints from the local dealer for an 80series and the 75.....and they all showed up with same part number

Rear 90's era 7x/8x are the same as 1974+ 4x/5x/6x*/7x front and rear. 90+ 7x and 8x fronts are shared. In the grand scheme of the things, there are only a half dozen common joints used on all Land Cruisers from early to current.
