You are not joking even a little, I can tell. Because I feel the same way.

Way serious. I have been involved in several wiring challenges, including helping build a 2FE in a 78 FJ 40. BTDT.
 
OK, the Sprinter engine / trans combo is good. I did lots of driving in a 2013 (2.1L) often loaded with 1,000+ lbs of wood products. Good smooth acceleration at all times. Well sorted powertrain with the transmission being the real star.

However what I really want to see is a BMW M57 conversion. I have to give credit to @Dragos80 for being the one to bring this motor to my attention. I have no idea how to make the swap happen, but there are dozens of Patrols running the M57 now.



Good power and sounds amazing. 300hp+ is apparently as difficult as plugging in a lamp. Would probably be 22-25ish mpg in our pigs.

Anyway, back on topic.....I am really looking forward to having another viable diesel option for those that want one. This Sprinter powertrain should be plentiful in N/A.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much wiring, if you want that much, get a space shuttle or HAL :moon:

If I ever find an 80 with a shot motor for the right price, I have a '96 12 valve P-pump and NV4500 that are looking for a home.

When you say weight is not a problem....how do the front end suspension components hold up in your 80? I pounded the snot out of the front of my Ram.....something was always wearing out....always. I carried a good inventory of ball joints and tie rods.

I'm curious to see the direction this goes. The wiring doesn't look that intimidating. The power and torque would be decent for a heavy 80 series too.

@Delta VS I am really curious why are you going down this rabbit hole after the R2.8 swap? R2.8 has more power/torque and stand alone harness.

Were you disappointed with the R2.8?

Is it for more gears? Axis Industries USA can mate GM 6 and 8 speeds and Mopar 8 speeds to R2.8. They just did an adapter for Rover Tcase, could certainly do TLC Tcases.

Is it because the Sprinter motors are cheap and you feel it could be a cheaper swap if harness and adapters are figured out?

Whatever your reasoning, I applaud your efforts to put diesels in US TLCs! :cheers:

I have be extremely frustrated that HDJs are not available in the US. Really pissed Toyota USA hates diesels, where all the TLCs “competitors” (I use that term very loosely) BMW, Mercedes, Range Rovers, and soon even Wranglers offer diesels as well as the four 1/2 ton truck makers starting next year.

I had 05 Ram, loved the torque but seeing how the weight beat up the front axle, which was massive compared to an 80s, I can’t imagine expecting to hold up to larger tires and wheeling.
So far I have blown out OME heavy front shocks after 20K. Replaced with the stiffest Bilstein 7100’s I could get. Rides so much better now but time will tell how long they last. At least they are rebuildable.
I’m a fan of any Diesel engine swap.

1. 400+ ft-lbs (I love that feeling of excess torque my Ram had - want plenty of reserve to tow 4000 lb travel trailer with ease)

2. Light compact package (I know it’s been done often, but I can’t imagine stuffing a 1200 lb 5.9 in my FZJ80)

3. Relatively quiet (I sold my 05 Ram CRD Cummins, which was quieter than the mechanical ones, because it was too noisy on highway. New Rams are way more quiet. One reason I will stay away 4BTs)

4. Good gear options (6 spd manual, 6 or 8 auto).

5. Sadly price matters.

My biggest hangup with the R2.8 is the torque rating, it’s original factory rating was around 265 ft-lbs, now 300. Rumor is that it doesn’t hold up well to being turned up to 400 ft-lbs.

The R3.8 is only slightly bigger and heavier than the R2.8 but was rated at 400 compared to R2.8s 265. I have emailed Cummins several times begging for this motor to be added to crate program - Crickets.

I figure my best hope is that someone will crack the EcoDiesel harness or the new GM 3.0 I6 and swap one of those in eventually.

The Ram Dana 60 front axles were a terrible design. Rather than having serviceable wheel bearing spaced out far enough to appropriately carry the load, they used unserviceable bearings that place both wheel bearings extremely close to each other. To give you a visual, picture holding a broom or shovel with two hands in the middle of the broom and your hands touching each other. How hard would it be to hold the broom still while someone was pulling on one end of the broom? Pretty hard right? this is the Dana 60 unit bearing design. Now picture if you slide your hands further apart on the handle, it gets easier to hold the broom still doesn't it, this is the Landcruiser knuckle design, also the Ford F250/350 design...much better load handling. I have't had any suspension issues, but I am also running Slinky Stage 4 suspension.

I have seen a video of a fully dressed 6BT weighing in at 949 lbs. I don't think anyone has done it in a Landcruiser yet, but instead of bolting an NV4500 behind the 6BT, you could bolt an NV5600 6 speed manual. You would have to make custom driveshafts and take a similar appring to the 2wd mainshaft like we did in the NV4500, but its probably doable as longs as the fuel tank clearance is ok....and tanks can always be relocated.

I would love my car to be drivable on and off the street.
The laws of physics are still valid even in a Cummins world.
Adding 600 lbs on the front of the car is not what one would call optimal in any situation. 1FZ is a heavy pig to start with. 6BT plus the NV tranny hardly do any justice.
Cheap? Yeah. But a major POS nonetheless.

I think you are trying hard to spell European Diesel Engine, but you used way too many words.

Carli rebuildable ball joints with lifetime warranty and the 2009+ steering rod assay was always there for you.

Carli BJ's + Yukon / EMS free spin hub conversion + 1 piece axle swap was the direction I went...expensive, but fixed all the ram axle weaknesses.
