Way to dive in! How did the fluid look an smell? Looks a little dark in the pics but that is probably just the lighting. The smell is obvious and when I smelled mine the first time it was burnt and dark. I knew better but slapped it back together (I installed a shift kit the first round) and as you know I had to pull the tranny back out and rebuild it. There won't be a lot of material on the friction plates to begin with but it shouldn't rub off on your fingers like mine did. Don't forget to soak them in tranny fluid first.

fluid actually looked good and didnt smell burnt. I didnt really inspect anything so I'll actually look at everything in the next day or two. I was a little concerned that the input on the tranny moved a bit as did this shaft...

any suggestions?

There are bushing kits to replace those if they are worn out. I figure your tranny was in use and didn't leak so some play is normal and is probably fine. To know how much is not, you'd probably have to ask a tranny shop or get a manual/search online for the specs. The bushings don't need to be replaced every rebuild. For me I addressed some weaknesses in mine and replaced the output shaft bushing and the one on the other end of the input shaft (per your pic) with upgraded units. Play on the t.converter side of the input shaft is normal. Definitely replace the t.converter seal and the o-ring (if yours had one) as a leaking seal can make it look like a pan gasket leak.

when I tipped it forward the t.converter side leaked a bit... probably should replace that one. The rear side seemed fine although the shaft in the planetary had play in it. I imagine that's somewhat normal though as it usually runs through the rest of the tranny insides...

ok, I managed to shoe horn the 60 into the garage and started prepping it for all its new junk... building the motor, one ton axles, th400,203/205, h1s, 42s, cage, fender cutting... possible bob job.

Ok, baby stayed at grandma's house tonight and my step daughter spent the night with her friend after the football game so I snuck out to the garage while my wife played the "sims" on the computer... I'm still using the make it fit calculator right now. If it seems plausible I'll cut the links to a more reasonable size and plug the numbers in the "4-link calculator."

Anyway, I started the mock up of the front 4 link. The previous owner used bushings on both sides and equal length links. I plan on using bushings on one side because it sounds like it might provide better stabilty and tightness for the short time periods it'll be on the road. The other end will probably get johnny joints. From the reading I've done I'll shorten up the top links to about 70% of the lowers.

This shot presents a very obvious problem...

Its looking pretty good to me. I don't think you will have much of a problem relocating the exhuast. Ebay mandrel bends are your friend :D.

I wish I had gone thru the expense & effort for links... maybe someday, I need to put more miles on the rig to justify it.

Yeah, part of the reason I left the motor in there before swapping over the top end was just to get an idea about room for the exhaust and the links. Even if I were able to tuck the exhaust out of the way, the three link just seems to be a better idea although I havent ruled anything out yet. I spent a better part of the weekend under big blue just staring at how everything is going to go together.

Thanks for the tip on the ebay bends... I've promised myself I'll never go back to an exhaust shop again after the abomination they did with this exhaust.

Side note... my wife just called and said UPS dropped off my junk from NWF. :) Pitbulls should be here mid-week!

SWEET ZACH!:)

I think the 3 link/panhard is going to be the ticket, seems like a simple plan and easy to package. Hell, with the trouble I'm going to go through I might just try a link suspension myself.:idea:

lol, I thought the idea was to keep your rig simple? That's why I got your tons right? hehehehee. You are worse than me when it comes not leaving things alone! Its a sickness!

I know I know...

I'll end up keeping the leafs under it, just trying to figure out a sanitary way to make new shackles.

I thought those uppers are tight .. good reason to go with a 3 link .. or maybe a Y link .. Junk ! she never gotta know the feeling !

my NWF shipment came... 1 ton/th400/203/205 junk is BEEFY. I LOVE IT!

Kyles junk sure is purdy, he even built mounting brackets for psc, is that thier ram setup you have?

so, I'm playin with the 4 link calc and I'm getting most of it but the COG is pretty hard to determine. I've read that a good general read on it would be the top bolt of the tranny?

some pics...

gettin closer to getting the th400 done. I really could have been done but the front band showed some wear so I ordered a new one. Should be here in a day or two... then I can move onto getting the 203/205 done.
