Sat. progress:

Got the th-400 buttoned up... lining up the clutches to get the different clutch assemblies to seat properly was probably the most difficult thing of the whole process:

Got the shift kit installed. I went for the "street" shift which is supposed to be the most firm. I hope that it doesnt end up breaking my teeth when it shifts:

I got two more wheels/tires together too. Still waiting on the new o-ring for the 4th wheel.

I'm hoping to start digging into the 203/205 tomorrow.

little more progress with swapping some of the 205 stuff.

I remembered to account for the fatty needle bearings (15)

Removed the shift rail pins:

then frustration set in... I could not get the shift rail out. Before I knew it and had the BFH out and started pounding on it. Still nothing. I decided to take a break and quit pounding on it and see if there was a better solution to getting it out.

I must have missed it but why did you need to replace the shift rails before you cut them?

Oh, yeah... I have few threads going ( I know I know I'm a dirty cross poster) and I forget to add stuff to some threads.

The "short" shift rail became lodged in its home and I tried "persuading" it out with Mr. BFH and thought it might be better to replace the rails after the BFH talked to the shift rail. ORD makes nice modded rails for the trip sticks and for front wheel drive anyway.

oh yeah.... got my coilovers ordered.

Geez, I go away for 10 days and you've gone and made a bunch of progress! The rig is really starting to look bad ass, puts mine to shame.

I put over 500 nearly trouble free mile on the cruiser over the last 10 days with only 30 of them on pavement. The stroker kicks ass and I absolutly LOVE the doubler.

Nice! Good to hear that monster of motor is doing well. Its funny that my original intentions were just to build my motor and it cascaded into this huge project and now I havent even touched the motor yet!!! I'll get there sooner or later.

not a ton to updates but here a few.... I got the ol' sawzall, plasma, and grinder out to start to remove the old brackets:

ThenI put some more work into swapping the front output shaft to the 32spline:

started putting the 203 doubler stuff together:

ARB came... Randy's ring and pinion is cheap and fast!

ran into a little problem... When I went to put the lock ring onto the mainshaft it seems that the either the mainshaft was machined just slightly off or the bearing isn't seating all the way down on it. In either case it is preventing the lock ring from fully engaging. If you look close enough at the crappy picture you can see that the bearing lip is raised over the "seat" of the mainshaft.

snap ring wont fully seat:

I was tempted just to hit it with a flap wheel but I decided to be patient and email Kyle at NWF. He literally responded within minutes! I ended up calling him today and we've got a couple things were are going to try before I ship the mainshaft back. It was great to get great customer support like that!!!

DON'T hit it with a flap disc!

I believe I had the same damn thing happen, thought for sure it was something mis-machined but from what I remember, I had something in the wrong place. I just looked at my old emails to the kit supplier and I had the thrust washer in the wrong place and had the same exact problem you are having. check the order of your washers before you do anything drastic!

It's all looking good though! I wish my parts were as nice as yours!

hmmm, seem like the thrust washer can only go one way... mainshaft, gear, locating pin, thrust washer?

Hmmmmm.... I can't remember exactly what the problem was (over 2 years ago) but there was something obvious that I missed. Try installing the original 203 shaft & see if it will go. That will definately tell you where the problem lies

Wait till you you bolt the 2 halves together, it was a total pain, since none of the bolt holes lined up causing alot work. :D

so this seems to be the problem... I knew my cheapo HF measuring device woud come handy some day.

(it says .977)

DSC02162.jpg
(it says 1.005)

so basically the thrust washer plus the bearing is bigger than distance on the mainshaft not allowing the lock ring to seat.
