Well, after years of wanting a 40, today I finally bought one. I came home w/ a 1970 40 w/ a brand new (0 miles on it) 350 and 700R4 tranny. I bought it from a guy who bought this 40 3 months ago w/ the intentions of fixing it up and keeping it for a while. He bought it from a Georgia state auction in April where it had been a state forest vehicle since it was new in the 70's (At least that is what he told me). The body is straight and doesn't show a whole lot of rust. He threw in a spare '78 front axle that he had as well as some other extra parts.
I've been wanting a 40 for 10 years. About 3 years ago I bought a 88 FJ62 and tinkered with it but always wanted a 40. I sold the 62 about a year ago. I rebuilt the front axle in the 62 and enjoyed doing it, but this 40 is uncharted territory for me. The engine and tranny are mated, but the TC is not hooked up as I understand I need to buy an adapter for it. I need to have the drive shafts shorted / lenghtened, buy a carburator, alternator, figure out how to get the auto tranny setup, and the list goes on and on and on and .... I've got a lot of work to get it running and a WHOLE lot of learning to do, but am looking forward to it. I will be searching the forums and asking a bunch of questions, so get ready. Oh, and thanks to Kipper for helping me out w/ the purchase.
So here she is. Let me know what you guys think. ETA: I paid $4,000
