Well, after years of wanting a 40, today I finally bought one. I came home w/ a 1970 40 w/ a brand new (0 miles on it) 350 and 700R4 tranny. I bought it from a guy who bought this 40 3 months ago w/ the intentions of fixing it up and keeping it for a while. He bought it from a Georgia state auction in April where it had been a state forest vehicle since it was new in the 70's (At least that is what he told me). The body is straight and doesn't show a whole lot of rust. He threw in a spare '78 front axle that he had as well as some other extra parts.

I've been wanting a 40 for 10 years. About 3 years ago I bought a 88 FJ62 and tinkered with it but always wanted a 40. I sold the 62 about a year ago. I rebuilt the front axle in the 62 and enjoyed doing it, but this 40 is uncharted territory for me. The engine and tranny are mated, but the TC is not hooked up as I understand I need to buy an adapter for it. I need to have the drive shafts shorted / lenghtened, buy a carburator, alternator, figure out how to get the auto tranny setup, and the list goes on and on and on and .... I've got a lot of work to get it running and a WHOLE lot of learning to do, but am looking forward to it. I will be searching the forums and asking a bunch of questions, so get ready. Oh, and thanks to Kipper for helping me out w/ the purchase.

So here she is. Let me know what you guys think. ETA: I paid $4,000

Nick

Howdy! Nice looking project. I always wonder why people go to all the work to get a job half done, and then they sell it. Did he run out of $$$, did he find out he was in over his head, or did he screw it up so bad he didn't want to deal with it. Hope it was the first. Good Luck. John

Nice rig, looks like a good deal, but it's hard to tell without knowing the price you paid.I think that photo of the transfer case in the back of your rig has an adapter there with it.Is that a AA adapter?.Lets ask some other folks what that is or can we see another pic of it.You have got alot of work left there, but it is a solid looking rig,man that is going to be nice!Keep a thread going this is going to a good one!

Now that I looked at that photo again, looks like it's just part of your transfer case, cause I see the nose cone there. Can we see a pic. of the tranny from under the truck. You are going to want to pull the tranny hump off also to have a better look at it from inside.
Good luck,John

Unusual color combination, I like it ! Looks like a good solid platform to start from. I'd yard the engine out and detail the engine bay if it were mine, that engine su:cheers:re looks purdy in there ! Have fun !

NIce i dig that style rear doors

I agree w/FJfool on the pulling of the engine/tranny.Pull that sucker out of there, clean it all up.Get rid of the stuff you are not going to use.Make yourself a clean slate to start with.Primer &paint the engine bay then build it the way you want(or can afford!) Or is that going too backwards for you? It's a good way to start, but watch out, next thing you know you will have the whole damm thing apart!

I think I may pull it out and line x the engine bay. I'd probably regret it down the road if I didn't do it. Being that this is all new to me, what is entailed to pull it out?

Nice find; I like state auctions....
